Teen Survives Being Struck by Prairie View Metra Train

The teen survived what police are describing as a suicide attempt.

A 17-year-old was hit by a Metra train Friday afternoon in what was an apparent suicide attempt, according to the Lake County Sherriff’s Office.

The teen stepped in front of a slow moving commuter train and was thrown from the tracks just before 4 p.m. at Route 22 and Prairie Road, Sgt. Sara Balmes said.

The person, whose gender Balmes declined to provide, was transported to Condell Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, she said. Balmes said the incident remains under investigation.

The incident is among the latest in a recent series involving trains in the northwest suburbs. Less than a month ago, a Buffalo Grove woman died after being struck by a train in Buffalo Grove. A few days later, a Lincolnshire man died when a train struck his vehicle as he drove around lowered railroad gates in Lake Forest, and a Lake Forest man was struck and killed by a Metra train near the Fort Sheridan station.

Friday evening, three people reportedly were able to exit a vehicle before it was struck by a train on Metra's North Central in Des Plaines.
