Area high school students are invited to apply for the annual $2,000 Friends of the Vernon Area Library Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship.
To qualify, applicants must live within the Vernon Area Public Library District, be in their senior year of high school, and have been accepted into a higher education program for the 2013-14 school year. They also must be able to describe in an essay how the library has affected their life or educational goals.
Applicants should submit a completed online form, a letter of reference, a letter of acceptance and a copy of the student’s most recent high school transcripts. The online form is available on the Vernon Area Public Library website. Look in the menu under Community > Allen Meyer Scholarship. Limit one submission per student. Please email letters and transcripts to email@example.com to be considered for the scholarship. All application materials must be submitted by March 1.
The prize money can be used to cover any college-related expenses, including tuition, room and board, books, or a new computer, among other expenses.
The scholarship is offered by the Friends of the Vernon Area Public Library in honor of former Library Director Allen Meyer, who passed away in 2008. During his tenure, Meyer provided strong leadership that allowed the library to meet the ever-changing informational and technological needs of district residents. He set ever-increasing high standards of excellence for himself and his staff, and he valued his day-to-day interactions with the staff and public. Meyer enjoyed working with the community and aimed to provide the best library services possible. It is in this spirit that they award this scholarship.
