Stevenson Sees Enrollment Decline

SHS has fewest number of students in nine years

Stevenson High School's official enrollment for 2010-11 is 4,205, the lowest since 2001-02. This year's enrollment is 140 students fewer than last year, marking the largest single-year decline since the school opened in 1965. This also is the fifth consecutive year that Stevenson's enrollment has decreased since reaching a peak of 4,573 in 2005-06. The official enrollment is based on attendance during the sixth day of classes, which was Aug. 26.

The Class of 2011 is the largest grade with 1,140 students, followed by the junior class (1,072), sophomores (1,041) and freshmen (952). There are 25 more males in the building than females (2,115 to 2,090).

This year's enrollment count was 11 students fewer than projected in December by demographer John Kasarda, who has provided demographic projections for Stevenson and most of its consortium districts for more than 20 years.

Kasarda's most recent projections show Stevenson's likeliest enrollment scenario to be one of steady annual declines for the next decade. Stevenson's enrollment is expected to fall to around 3,700 by 2020. SHS last saw enrollment that low in 1999.
