Kindergarten Students Grow, Donate Produce

St. Mary School students planted vegetables to learn about healthy eating and hone other skills.

kindergartners are, for the second year, are planting and cultivating vegetables. The kindergartner’s started seedlings indoors in January. The children watered and nurtured the seedlings and watched them grow into healthy plants. They transferred the grown seedlings a few weeks ago into outdoor planters. The children have planted tomatoes, peppers, peas, beans, cucumbers, zucchini, chives, cabbage, onions and broccoli.

St. Mary uses The Veggiecation Program, a nutrition education program that introduces young children to the delicious and nutritious world of vegetables. This program has received national acclaim and is currently in use in 26 states. The St. Mary kindergarten class is using the program to integrate math, science, language arts, music and movement into each day. The kindergartners are also planning on donating some of their fresh produce to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Mary Parish.
