BGHS Expressions Raise Funds

Car wash, bake sale and garage sale benefits program

They cook. They clean. They run a pretty profitable resale business. And that's just on the side.

While their classmates were likely basking in the bright summer sun, Buffalo Grove High School's Expressions show choir members spent part of their vacation raising funds for the organization.

The show choir's 38 singers, nine-member band and four crew members hosted a two-day garage sale, bake sale and car wash in August at London Middle School. Throughout the event, they gratefully accepted donations after soaping and scrubbing cars, and sold a variety of other goods, ranging from homemade cookies to used toys and apparel donated by community members.

A team of singers lined the sidewalk along Dundee Road, shouting out to drivers -- and imploring them to stop for a car wash.

"I'll go to Homecoming with you if you get a car wash!" bellowed senior Charlie Walker, as traffic whizzed by.

When asked if the approach was working, the dateless Walker had a quick response. "No."

Meanwhile, London's front entrance bustled with shoppers, who left with arms full of their new treasures, such as clothes, children's books and Lite-Brites, and dirty cars rolled in.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help the Expressions purchase costumes and cover travel expenses.

The August effort was one of several fundraisers the show choir holds throughout the year. The group also holds a silent auction as part of its Cabaret performance, and students sell tubs of cookie dough to supplement the budget.
