Legislation Aims for Safer Soccer Goals

Rep. Carol Sente sponsored a bill that will require organizations to investigate how they store and set-up movable soccer goals.

Seven-and-a-half years after the tragic death of 6-year-old Vernon Hills resident Zachary “Zach” Tran was caused by an unsecured soccer goal, legislation sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-59th) requiring organizations like park districts to examine how they store, set-up and secure soccer goals recently passed the House and now goes to the governor before becoming law.

“I sincerely hope this legislation will help prevent avoidable tragedies by encouraging increased safety measures,” Sente, of Vernon Hills, said in a statement. “By asking organizations like park districts to examine how they secure soccer goals we are taking positive steps toward protecting children. It has been a privilege to work with the Tran family to pass this meaningful safety legislation.”

House Bill 1130 creates the Movable Soccer Goal Safety Act to require organizations to investigate how they store and set-up movable soccer goals as a means to make sure goals are secured in a safe manner. Organizations will develop their own policies regarding specific safety practices and standards.

Additionally, within one year, the manufacturing standards will be changed to reduce future risks through improved fabrication and design technology. These guidelines were established by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure that soccer goals are anchored, secured and counterweighed properly.

“These new safety measures will help save lives,” Sente said. “I have been truly inspired by the Tran family and through this legislation we all can honor their son Zach’s memory. I urge the governor to act quickly to sign this potentially life-saving piece of legislation.”
