Buffalo Grove Police Chief Receives, Gives Praise

Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steve Balinski expressed gratitude to the community this week for its support during his 36 years of service. He will retire April 2.

Buffalo Grove officials intended to put the spotlight on Police Chief Steve Balinski Monday night, honoring him in the final days of his service.

But Balinski turned the tables when he took the podium and spent about six minutes praising Buffalo Grove staff, trustees, community members and others who have touched his life since he joined the Buffalo Grove Police Department in 1976.

“I think that we’ve accomplished everything we’ve had in 36 years, especially being one of the safest communities in the country, because of the people that are here … and I can’t thank you enough,” he told village staff, elected officials, residents and police officers and relatives who attended the Village Board meeting.

“I feel blessed,” he said. “All of you have been very important to me. You’ve been my strength. You’ve allowed me to succeed.”

“I am blessed because of everybody here, and I want to say thank you, and I mean that sincerely,” he said. “I just feel lucky that I come to work every day and believe it or not, you pay me.”

“It’s been a pleasure to serve you. It’s been an honor to wear the badge.”

Balinski received two standing ovations, one after his remarks and the other following recognition from Village President Jeff Braiman.

“We’re fortunate here in Buffalo Grove. We have an outstanding police department and one of those reasons is the efforts of Steve Balinski,” Braiman said.

“From the time you first came, you’ve done nothing but make our department, make our village better,” he told Balinski.

The praise followed an hour-long reception in Balinski’s honor. The chief will retire April 2. Deputy Chief Steve Husak will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is named.
