Police Blotter: Vandals Rearrange Yards, Cut Christmas Lights

ALARM

Officers responded to an active alarm at 7:15 p.m. Dec. 16 on the 1-100 block of North Manchester Drive and found the rear sliding door unsecured.  The interior was checked and no one was found inside. The homeowner arrived and stated that all was in order.

Three people were charged with alcohol-related offenses at 1:30 a.m. Dec. 15 after police responded to a report of a party on the 800 block of Shady Grove Lane. Jason K. Koetz, 20, of the 200 block of East Skokie Road, Lake Bluff, and Nicole L. Rubin, 18, of the 25700 block of North Arrowhead Drive were charged with possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor and Caityln J. Levin, 18, of the 800 block of Shady Grove Lane, Buffalo Grove, was charged with social host responsibility. 

A resident of Grove Drive reported an unknown and intoxicated person in the hallway at 8:10 p.m. Dec. 15. An officer located the person with a bottle of vodka and while the officer was there the person fell and struck his head. Paramedics transported him to the hospital.

Alexander Navakovsky, 45, of the 2100 block of Valencia, Northbrook, was charged with driving under the influence and illegal lane usage at 1:25 a.m. Dec. 15 on Lake-Cook Road at Hastings Drive.

Alex A. Tomczyk, 19, of the 100 block of Armstrong Drive, Buffalo Grove, was charged with driving under the influence, illegal lane usage, driving without insurance and no registration plat at 4:10 a.m. Dec. 16 on Cobbler Lane at Weiland Road.

ANIMALS

A resident of the 1100 block of Windbrooke Drive reported an ongoing issue with a dog barking in a neighboring unit at 8 p.m. Dec. 15. An officer could hear the dog bark and no one answered the door. A citation was left for the neighbor.

BURGLARY

A resident of the 2600 block of Acacia Terrace reported that he heard the doorbell ring four times at 1:45 p.m. Dec. 15, but he did not answer the door because his parents told him not to. When the resident looked out of the window, he saw a woman walking away. A few moments later, the resident heard a woman’s voice inside the house. When the resident yelled down to ask who she was and what she wanted, the woman replied by asking if the address was 2930. The resident replied no. The woman then left in an unknown direction. When the resident went downstairs, there were wet footprints in the kitchen. There was a pry mark on the sliding door. When the resident’s parents returned home, they checked and found everything in order.

COMPLAINTS

An officer responding to a noise complaint at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 on Oak Creek Drive heard children running around in a unit. The officer spoke with the resident and asked that he be respectful of his neighbors and attempt to keep the noise down.

A resident of Columbus Parkway reported that his neighbor placed two tree stumps between their driveways and he wound up driving over one at 4 p.m. Dec. 16. The car was not damaged. The neighbor stated that he placed the stumps at that location for landscape enhancement and that he has a plat of survey showing that the property is his. 

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

A Walgreens pharmacist reported that a man turned in a prescription at 11:35 a.m. Dec. 15 and was A male subject turned in a prescription for a controlled substance and was advised that it would take 20 minutes to fill it. The pharmacist then determined the prescription to be a fake and she notified police. When Kenneth C. Davis, 23, of the 200 block of 108th Street, Chicago, returned to pick up the prescription, he was arrested while leaving the store. He was charged with altering an issued prescription form and possession of a prescription form not issued by prescriber. Both are Class 4 felonies.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

A complainant reported that she met her husband’s ex-wife to exchange the complainant’s stepson at 4:55 p.m. Dec. 14 on the 1100 block of West Lake-Cook Road. During the exchange, the ex-wife’s new husband began to yell at the complainant and raised his hand as if to strike the complainant, which she said he has done before. An officer spoke with the new husband and advised him that should he threaten or strike the complainant again, he will be arrested.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident reported Dec. 12 that he has learned that his debit card has been used in Florida and a fraudulent charge of $234.71 was made. The resident has also been receiving calls from loan institutions to verify loan applications. The resident will place an alert with the credit bureaus.

IMPROPER SECURITY

Officers responded to an active alarm at 12:55 p.m. Dec. 14 on the 400 block of Buckthorn Terrace and found the rear sliding door unsecured.  Officers checked the home and found no one inside and all appeared to be in order. The door was secured and a note was left for the homeowner.

PHONE HARASSMENT

A resident reported Dec. 15 that her ex-boyfriend continues to send text messages even though she has asked him to delete her from his phone. An officer spoke with the ex who agreed to stop communicating and requested that the resident do the same.

A resident reported that his ex-girlfriend’s sister called him twice on Dec. 16 and during the conversations, the ex-girlfriend’s sister made threats of bodily harm to both the resident and his wife. An officer called the ex-girlfriend’s sister who denied making any threats. The ex-girlfriend’s sister was asked not to call or go to the resident’s house and she agreed.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

A resident of the 400 block of Horatio Boulevard reported that a contractor who was reroofing the house on Oct. 29 dropped a tool, which struck the resident’s car and damaged the right front quarter panel. The left rear quarter panel was also damaged when a stepladder fell.

A resident of the 1400 block of Mill Creek Drive reported that someone cut a strand of outdoor Christmas lights between 5-8:30 p.m. Dec. 14. The resident told police he suspects a neighbor who had asked the resident why he was decorating his house when no one else in the neighborhood was doing so.

A resident of Greenwood Court South reported at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 15 that someone entered his fenced-in backyard, pulled a small tree out of the ground and pulled up three pavers and placed them elsewhere in the yard.

A complainant reported that after picking up his antique car after repairs between Oct. 1 and Dec. 14 at a shop on the 1-100 block of North Buffalo Grove Road, he found that the rear bumper had been pulled away from the body and the trunk would not open. The complainant will discuss the damage with the owner. 

PUBLIC SERVICE

A resident reported that when she used she used her debit card to withdraw money from the ATM at 6:45 a.m. Dec. 15 at First American Bank, the machine returned the card and receipt but issued no money.  The resident was advised to speak with bank officials when the bank opens and the officer placed an out of order sign on the machine.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/INCIDENT

A resident of the 1900 block of Sheridan Road reported that someone turned on the home’s east outside spigot between 11 a.m. and 6:40 p.m. Dec. 15. Water was flowing freely but there was no damage.

A resident of the 2100 block of Apple Hill Lane reported a person was riding a bicycle behind the construction trailers in the area at 3:10 p.m. Dec. 15. The resident was concerned because of previous thefts. An officer checked and found the trailers secure and the cyclist gone. 

THEFT

A resident of Lake Boulevard reported Dec. 13 stated that he signed a contract for home repairs/improvement on Nov. 8, and the work has not started. When the resident requested to have his $3,500 refunded, the contractor stated that he did not have the money. Police charged the contractor, Mark J. Greenberg, 59, of 2822 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights, with aggravated home repair fraud, a Class 2 felony.

A complainant told police he was confronted by two men in a gray car who “talked to him about gang stuff” at 11:50 a.m. Dec. 14 on the 1-100 block of West Dundee Road. The complainant ran from the parking lot and was chased by the men. Officers located the complainant and when he was returned to the parking lot, his bike was gone.

A resident of the 1000 block of Pine Tree Circle North reported that a Nikon camera, an Asus notebook computer and a trickle battery charger went missing from her garage between Oct. 16 and Dec. 2. The items are valued at $1,140. 

THEFT

A Shell gas station clerk reported that a female subject pumped $11.86 in gas and then drove off without paying at 10:05 a.m. Dec. 16. An officer contacted the registered owner who stated that her daughters were out with the car and she did not believe that they did not pay on purpose. The owner said she would contact her daughters and have them return and pay the bill.

A Rogan’s Shoes employee reported that she placed her cell phone into an employee locker but did not lock it at 10 a.m. Dec. 16. At the end of her shift at 4:30 p.m., she found the Apple iPhone 4 missing. The find your phone app indicated that the phone was at an address in Wheeling.  Officers went to that address and the cooperative residents assisted in searching for the phone without success.  

A resident reported that when his daughter and her friend were leaving Xtreme Trampolines at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 16, they returned to their belongings and found that both of their UGG boots were gone. Security video showed two boys; approximately 11 to 13 years of age, took the boots.  

TURNED IN PROPERTY

A citizen told police that while cleaning his father in law’s home on Dec. 14, he found a handgun that he wanted to turn in for destruction. The black 25-caliber Hawes handgun was packaged and placed into property for destruction.

VANDALISM

A resident of Beechwood Court East reported that someone entered his backyard, removed a bag of fertilizer from under the deck and spread it around between 8 p.m. Dec. 14 and 9 a.m. Dec. 15. In addition, the basketball hoop was moved and decorative lighting was moved.

A resident of Beechwood Court East reported that someone hung a construction sign from the swing set in his backyard and moved a number of landscape rocks between 8 a.m. Dec. 14 and 3:20 p.m. Dec. 15.

OTHER INCIDENTS

Residents requested an extra watch on their home because an acquaintance had been arrested at a family wedding on Dec. 9, and the residents are concerned about retaliation.
