Police Blotter: Suspicious Activity Reported Around Tree

These were among the reports released Nov. 29 by the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

DRUGS

David W. Drake, 20, of the 1-100 block of Cedar Lane, Lincolnshire, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting/obstructing a police officer, unlawful use of a weapon, fleeing the police, disobeying a police officer, illegal lane usage and driving without insurance at 3:30 a.m. Nov. 25 on Buffalo Grove Road at St. Mary's Parkway.

ALCOHOL

Alfredo Parra, 22, of the 1300 block of East Turtle Creek Circle, Palatine, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving without a license, driving too fast for conditions and improper lane usage at 4:10 a.m. Nov. 21 on Dundee Road at Golfview Terrace.

Luis G. Flores, 31, of the 1300 block of Turtle Creek, Palatine, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with an expired license, speeding and illegal lane usage at 2:20 a.m. Nov. 25 on eastbound Dundee Road from Trace Drive.

Ricardo Ramirez-Landin, 29, of the 1500 block of Norway Lane, Palatine, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, speeding and driving without insurance at 12:30 a.m. Nov. 29 on Dundee Road at Crofton Lane.

TRUANCY

A 14-year-old Prairie View resident was charged with truancy at 12:35 p.m. Nov. 23 at Buffalo Grove High School.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

Someone damaged the passenger-side mirror on a 2008 Honda CRV parked on the 1100 block of Windbrooke Drive between 10 p.m. Nov. 23 and 9:10 a.m. Nov. 24.

LOST ITEM

A customer at Seoul Supermarket, 1204 W. Dundee Road, reported that her wallet fell out of her purse while she walked from her car to the store at 1 p.m. Nov. 24. When she returned to the store, the wallet could not be found. Security video showed another customer picking up the wallet and leaving the area. Store personnel stated that the offender is a regular customer and the store will notify police when the offender returns.

A customer at Jewel, 79 N. McHenry Road, reported that she left her purse in the bathroom at 11 p.m. Nov. 24. When she returned, the purse was gone. An officer checked the bathroom and surrounding areas, including the exterior of the store, but could not locate the purse. A store manager will review security video.

A resident of the 1-100 block of Somerset Lane stated that his wife left her diamond bracelet on her dresser at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24, and when she looked for it at 7 a.m. Nov. 25, it was gone. The resident called back later and advised that the bracelet was located.

THEFT

An official at Walgreen's, 1225 W. Dundee Road, reported that a 15-year-old girl took merchandise without paying for it at 2:10 p.m. Nov. 24. Police contacted the girl's mother and a school resource officer, and a conference was held. The merchandise was paid for, and the girl was released to her mother.

A customer at McDonald's, 1200 N. Arlington Heights Road, reported that he left his wallet on the restaurant's counter after placing an order at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24. When the complainant returned to the restaurant, no one knew anything about the wallet.  The officer was advised that the store owner will have access to the security video.

Officers responded to a report of a driver who failed to pay for $25.16 worth of gasoline at 12:15 a.m. Nov. 25 at Speedway, 201 Milwaukee Ave. The vehicle was described as a silver two-door Infinity. A customer followed the vehicle and obtained a license number. Officers located the vehicle and driver, who denied being at the gas station. The vehicle was a Toyota and the female was thin rather then heavy built, as reported. Due to the discrepancies, the officer will follow up with the gas station manager to review the security video.

A resident reported that he saw a white pickup truck pull into his neighbor's driveway at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 26 on the 100 block of Newfield Court. The resident confronted the driver, who was evasive and then drove off. The resident had only a partial license plate and the vehicle was not located. An officer checked the neighbor's house and found it secure with no signs of tampering.

A resident reported that his bank alerted him to six unauthorized online purchases, totaling $271.55, through his account between Nov. 25-26.

A resident reported Nov. 22 that someone withdrew $3,875.00 from his bank account. The transaction took place in Roswell, Ga.

A resident was notified by a credit provider Nov. 24 that someone attempted to open an account using the resident's name, Social Security number and date of birth. The credit provider became suspicious when the applicant could not provide the appropriate phone number. The attempted application took place in New York.  The resident has contacted the credit bureaus.

A resident was informed by her credit provider on Nov. 27 that unauthorized subjects were using her credit card at the Woodfield Mall. It was learned that the suspects have been arrested by Schaumburg Police. The resident has not used the card for a year and still has it in her possession. The resident was advised to contact the Schaumburg police and to put a fraud alert with the credit bureaus.

A complainant said her bank informed her of three fraudulent checks cashed from her account between Nov. 17-22. Two of the checks were cashed in Chicago and one was cashed at the Jewel in Buffalo Grove.

PHONE HARASSMENT

A resident reported that she received calls and text messages from her ex-boyfriend threatening harm to her acquaintance between Nov. 24-26. The ex shows up periodically to see his infant son. The resident does not want the ex contacted and officers suggested that the resident seek an order of protection and to contact her attorney for a custody arrangement.

BATTERY

A resident reported Nov. 26 that his ex-wife's roommate came to the door to pick up the resident's children. The resident told the roommate to leave but he refused. When the resident opened the front door for the third time, the roommate entered the house and a physical altercation ensued with the resident obtaining a bloody lip. The roommate came to the station and stated that he has a signed permission slip from the mother to pick up the children. The children did not want to go with the roommate, the resident did not want to sign complaints and the roommate was advised not to return.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE

A resident stated that she had observed a vehicle and person parked in the cul-de-sac at 3 p.m. Nov. 26 on the 2000 block of Sheridan Court. The person got out of his car and appeared to retrieve something near a tree in the cul-de-sac island. The resident also observed a vehicle with two subjects, one of whom got out of the car, went to the tree and appeared to leave something behind. When the resident's husband checked, he found nothing. The resident was advised to call 911 immediately when she sees suspicious persons and/or activity.

OTHER INCIDENTS

An alarm company reported a medical alarm was activated at 7:25 a.m. Nov. 24, but no one at the home, on the 400 block of Hiawatha Drive, was answering. An officer found an open door and but found no one inside. The resident then returned home and was advised to contact his alarm company.

An officer responded to a 911 hang-up call at 11:45 p.m. Nov. 24 on the 1200 block of Sandhurst Drive. The resident told police that he dialed 911 because his laptop was missing.  When the resident realized that his son had the computer, he hung up.

A complainant reported Nov. 24 that his estranged wife is using his Social Security number to modify the loan on her home. The complainant informed the bank and officers informed him of the procedure for reporting fraud to the credit bureaus.

A store manager at Walgreen's, 1701 N. Buffalo Grove Road, reported a customer touching the cash register in the photo department at 12:40 p.m. Nov. 25. The customer stated that he liked the store and was seeking employment there. The customer was advised that touching the register was inappropriate and that he could file an application for employment on the company's website. The store manager stated that this has occurred on a number of occasions and requested the subject not return to the store.

Buffalo Grove's postmaster reported at 10:20 a.m. Nov. 26 that subjects were soliciting outside the post office, 225 N. Buffalo Grove Road, and had been asked to leave. Officers spoke with a subject who was collecting signatures for petitions for public office. The subject stated that he was on public property and had a right to be there. The postmaster stated that a federal statute existed prohibiting the subject's activity. The postmaster was unable to provide the officer with the statute and the officer suggested that a Postal Inspector enforce the statute and make an arrest. Post office personnel were conferring on a plan of action when the officer departed.

A resident on Nov. 26 turned in miscellaneous fireworks that she found in her crawl space. The resident thought the fireworks had been there for about 25 years. The fireworks were placed into property for destruction.

A resident reported Nov. 27 that she had received an email from what she believed to be PayPal. The email stated that PayPal was having difficulty with her account and needed more information about her. When the resident called PayPal, she was advised that the email was fake. The resident also received a call from her credit provider about suspicious activity on her account. PayPal also advised that purchases had been made by an unknown person. The credit provider and PayPal will follow up.

A complainant stated that while loading her groceries into the car at 5:50 p.m. Nov. 28 at Dominick's, 450 Half Day Road, a subject approached her in an inappropriate manner by grabbing at the groceries and touching the complainant's 13-month-old child. An officer determined the subject to be a Dominick's employee who was trying to help the complainant with her groceries. The employee said he was not aware that he touched the child and apologized.

LOST CAT

A resident found a gray and black short-haired tabby cat on the 100 block of Cooperwood Drive. The cat did not have a collar or tags and no chip was located. The cat was taken to King's Kennel.
