Police Blotter: Man Charged With DUI, Illegal Gun

The following arrest information was supplied by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

ALCOHOL

Shalin Shah, 31, of the 900 block of West Moreland Drive, Vernon Hills, was charged with driving under the influence and driving without insurance at 2:50 a.m. May 29 on westbound Aptakisic Road east of Brandywyn Road.

Michael A. Jost, 49, of the 700 block of South Merle, Wheeling, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a firearm (No valid FOID card) and unlawful use of a weapon at 3:05 p.m. May 30 on the 1-100 block of North McHenry Road after a citizen reported a male subject was slumped over the wheel of a car. Police found the barrel of a loaded 9mm Luger pistol sticking out from under a stocking cap on the passenger seat.

ANIMALS

A resident found a full-size, reddish-gold, well-behaved Golden Retriever on May 27 in the area of the 400 block of Estate Drive. The dog, which had neither tags or a microchip, was taken to Kings Kennel.

A resident reported a large, brown, fluffy dog loose on May 29 in the area of the 300 block of Glendale Road. An officer attempted to apprehend to dog without success.  A neighbor showed the officer where the dog belonged. An officer opened the gate to the yard and the dog went inside. There was no answer at the door, so citations were left at the door.

BATTERY

A resident reported that her 17-year-old son had been involved in a physical altercation at 6:30 p.m. May 29 on Armstrong Drive at Lexington Drive. The son stated that while he was walking, an acquaintance pulled up in a car, got out, started yelling profanities and then grabbed the victim around the neck. Officers spoke with the acquaintance, who stated that he approached the victim and asked about money owed. The victim then used profanities and did the pushing. An officer will follow up.

BURGLARY

A resident of the 1100 block of Miller Lane reported that she and her roommate left the patio door open when they went to bed at 12:30 a.m. May 28. When the resident got up at 5 a.m., she found that someone unknown had entered the apartment during the night and took two iPads from the computer table. Nothing else was missing.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICES

An employee at a business on the 1500 block of East Busch Parkway reported that a subject paid the $392.15 bill by check on April 14 and the check came back from the bank twice for non-sufficient funds. An officer called the subject and she stated she would call the employee and arrange for restitution.

An employee at a business on the 1500 block of East Busch Parkway reported that a customer paid the $1,910.94 bill April 7 and the check came back twice for non-sufficient funds. An officer contacted the customer and he stated that he would contact the employee and arrange for restitution.

A employee at a business on the 1500 block of East Busch Parkway reported that a customer paid the $1,651.14 bill on April 2 and the check came back twice marked “account closed.” An officer left a message for the customer, who then called the employee an arranged for restitution.

DISPUTE

A store manager on the 200 block of North McHenry Road stated that customers became angry while claiming to have given the clerk more money than the clerk said they did at 4:15 p.m. May 29. The manager checked the till and found it to be correct. The subjects then left.

A hockey coach at twin Rinks Ice Pavilion reported that a father confronted him between 4-7 p.m. May 28 to complain about the lack of playing time his son was getting. The father then threatened bodily harm to the coach. No complaints were signed and the coach did not want the father contacted.

DRIVING COMPLAINT

A pedestrian reported that while walking at 11:45 a.m. May 30 on the 1-100 block of West Dundee Road, a vehicle came around the corner and almost struck him. Words were exchanged. An officer spoke with the driver, who stated that he did not almost hit someone and that he became argumentative when the pedestrian pointed his finger at him.

FIRE ASSIST

A resident of the 100 block of Selwyn Lane reported that the interior of his car had been on fire between 7:30 p.m. May 26 and 1:30 a.m. May 27, causing heavy smoke damage and fire damage to the front passenger seat. The car was locked and there were no signs of forced entry. The seats are electrically operated and heated.

A bystander reported smoke coming third floor west wing of Extended Stay America, 1525 East Busch Parkway, at 3:40 p.m. May 28. The hotel was evacuated and the premises were checked. Fire personnel were unable to determine the cause or source of the smoke.

FORGERY

A pharmacist at Walgreens, 15 N. Buffalo Grove Road, reported May 27 that a customer was attempting to obtain prescription drugs with a prescription that had been noticeably altered from 30 pills to 120 pills. The customer denied knowledge on how the prescription was changed. Charges are pending the statements from the doctor and nurse.

LOST/FOUND ITEMS

An officer found a black leather wallet containing a driver’s license and ID cards at 9 a.m. May 28 at Buffalo Grove and Half Day roads.  A message was left for the owner that his wallet was found.

A resident turned in an Apple iPod phone that his daughter found lying in the street at Aptakisic and Weiland roads on May 27. An officer attempted to get owner information from the phone, but it is passcode protected. The phone was placed into property.

PHONE HARASSMENT

A resident reported receiving text messages, email and phone calls from a former boyfriend between May 21-29. The resident then sent a text message to the former boyfriend and asked that he stop. He sent another message calling her a name. An officer attempted to contact the former boyfriend but was only able to leave a voice message.

A resident reported receiving numerous phone calls from a male subject between noon and 1:40 p.m. May 30 who stated that a package from a law firm would arrive at the resident’s home. The resident stated that he did not expect any package and hung up. The male called back stating that he had an FBI agent next to him to assist with the delivery of the package. The caller stated that he would be calling the police and the agent could speak with them. No package was delivered and no FBI agent called. The resident was given *57 instructions.

A resident reported receiving numerous calls between 11:40 a.m. and 6:50 p.m. May 30, and when she answered, no one was on the line. When an officer attempted to call the number, a recording said that the area code and number dialed are not valid. AT&T was notified of the calls.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

A resident of the 800 block of Trace Drive stated that when she went out to her car, she found that the right front tire had been flattened between 8 p.m. May 26 and 4 a.m. May 27. There was a one-inch puncture in the sidewall. The resident stated that this is the second incident and believes the offender is a neighbor with whom she has issues about parking in front of “his” building.

A resident of the 2000 block of Sheridan Road reported that someone punctured the sidewall of a tire on a vehicle parked in the driveway between 9:15 p.m. May 29 and 9 a.m. May 30. The resident stated that he has had some issues with teenagers in the area. The resident will provide officers of security video that was recorded overnight. 

SOLICITOR COMPLAINTS

A resident reported two solicitors walking in the area of Newtown Drive and Weiland Road at 4:10 p.m. May 30. Officers located the subjects who stated that they were soliciting for Champaign-based Daddy’s Little Girl Global Apparel. The subjects did not have a permit and agreed to stop their activity and leave the area.

A resident of the 400 block of Thorndale Drive reported that a male subject came to the door at 6:45 p.m. May 30 and asked the resident’s son when his parents would be home. An officer located the subject, who stated that he was soliciting for Daddy’s Little Girl Global Apparel. The solicitor was told to stop until permits were obtained.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT/PERSON

A resident of the 3200 block of Indian Creek Drive reported that a male subject rang her doorbell at 11:45 a.m. May 28. Because the resident was on the phone, her daughter answered the door. When the subject asked to speak with the girl’s mom or dad, the resident motioned to the subject that she was on the phone and could not come to the door. The subject then went to his car where a female, coming from a neighbor’s house, joined him. The two subjects then drove off in a black GMC Jimmy. No license information was available. The area was checked with negative results.

A 13-year-old resident reported that while she was riding her bicycle on the sidewalk at Nicole Park, 501 N. Arlington Heights Road, a vehicle pulled into the driveway, blocking her way. The driver asked the resident if he was blocking her way and she replied “yes.” The resident noticed that the driver had no shirt on and was doing something with his hand.  The driver was described as a black male and the car was described as a white boxy vehicle — a hatchback or small SUV — with a V emblem on the vehicle.

A resident of the 100 block of Raupp Boulevard reported that while she was gardening on May 20, two male subjects approached her on bicycles and asked if they could help with her work. She allowed them to help, was satisfied with their work and paid them. On May 30, one of the subjects came back and asked if he could do additional work. The resident allowed the subject into her house but did not leave him out of her sight. They discussed additional work and the subject departed. The resident then became uncomfortable about the subjects, called the one and told him not to return.

THEFT

A complainant reported May 27 that someone made a $700 unauthorized withdrawal from her account. The transaction took place in Atlanta, GA. The card has been canceled.

A resident reported that someone made three unauthorized charges to her account between May 5-28. The credit provider will reimburse the charges and has issued a new card.

A resident reported May 29 that someone made an unauthorized charge to her account. The card has been canceled.

A resident of the 100 block of Steeple Drive reported May 30 that five Coach purses valued at $1,500 and seven Dooney & Bourke purses valued at $2,100, which she stored in boxes, were missing from her room. They were taken sometime after Jan. 17. There were no signs of forced entry into the home. 

A resident of the 400 block of St. Mary’s Parkway reported that someone removed the rear license plate from his vehicle between May 28-30.

VANDALISM

A Public Works employee reported that someone unknown spray-painted graffiti between 8:45 a.m. May 26 and 9:30 a.m. May 27 on the north side of the well building at 120 Horatio Boulevard.

A resident of the 400 block of Lamont Terrace reported that someone placed numerous Post-it notes containing vulgar statements on her son’s car between 2-6:30 a.m. May 29. The son believes that one or more of his co-workers may have left the notes.

OTHER INCIDENTS

A resident of the 600 block of Raintree Road reported May 26 that his house has been egged over the past few months. He believes the offender to be his son’s classmate, who threw an egg at the son while at school and told him to have a good summer.

A resident of the 900 block of Aspen Drive reported someone unknown moved two of her pathway stepping stones, located on the south side of her house, between May 28-29.

A resident reported that his adult son came to his house May 30 to discuss a business they were starting. During the discussion, the son became angry, yelled and punched a door, then left. An officer called the son, who stated that he was under control and that he would call his father to smooth things over.
