I-94 Construction Begins Monday

Lake-Cook Road to Half Day Road is targeted for improvements.

The Tri-State Tollway (I-94) Rehabilitation Project between Lake-Cook and Half Day roads is scheduled to begin overnight on April 23. Work includes concrete repairs to provide a new, smooth surface and extend the life of the roadway.

"This rehabilitation of the North Tri-State Tollway will keep the roadway in a state of good repair for years to come," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. "To minimize the impact of construction on daily commuters, the Tollway is limiting all lane closures to overnight hours."

The majority of work will be done during overnight hours to minimize the impact to traffic in this highly-traveled corridor that is used by as many as 120,000 vehicles a day. The Tollway will use traffic shifts and shoulders to keep as many lanes open during peak hours as were available before construction. Four lanes in both directions will be maintained during daytime hours and all lane closures will be scheduled during overnight hours.

Traffic shifts and splits in the section between Lake-Cook Road and Half Day Road will provide a long-term work zone for concrete patching work while keeping four lanes open to traffic during peak hours.

Initial work on the project includes pre-stage work to remove the rumble strips and repair the shoulders in both directions before shifting traffic to create work zones in the section between Lake-Cook and Half Day roads. Approximately one week later, traffic will shift to the right to begin pavement patching work on the left.

The $8.1 million project also includes the stretch between Atkinson Road and Illinois Route 176 (Rockland Road). The project is scheduled to be complete in the fall.

All work will be done overnight in the section between Atkinson Road and Rockland Road. Lanes will be reopened in time for the morning rush. This work is scheduled to begin April 30. The Tollway is partnering with the Village of Green Oaks to rehabilitate the pavement in this section.
