A Patch reader wants to know what you think.

Do you think cyclists obey traffic laws?

Buffalo Grove Patch reader Richard is asking fellow citizens to weigh in as to whether police should ticket bike riders who fail to obey stop signs.

“It is ongoing and against the law but never stopped by police,” he posted July 29 on Patch.

“Totally agree! If they are on the road, they need to follow the same rules as a car,” commented Steve Schneider.

“The riders do not obey the traffic laws, but, the driver of the car gets in trouble if they accidentally hit the bike rider...” wrote Janice Kahl Pasupathy.

Cyclists are held to the same traffic laws as drivers, according to the state law.

Specifically, cyclists must obey roadway traffic signs and signals and ride in the same direction as traffic, according to CyberDriveIllinois.com. Meanwhile, drivers must allow at least three feet between their vehicle and a bicyclist when passing.

Do you think this is a problem in Buffalo Grove? If so, do you think drivers need to be more cautious or do cyclists need to be more conscious or the rules of the road? Should police step up enforcement in this area? Tell us in the comment section below or share your thoughts on Richard’s original post here.
