Blockbuster Video Closing in Buffalo Grove

A liquidation sale is in progress at 686 S. Buffalo Grove Road.

A liquidation sale is underway at Buffalo Grove’s Blockbuster Video store, where movies, video games, candy and even store fixtures are priced to sell.

Items in the store are marked up to 70 percent off. The liquidation sale will run through March 24, an employee said.

Blockbuster’s parent company, Dish Network, announced last month plans to close about 300 stores across the nation, the Huffington Post reported. The company also closed about 500 stores in 2012, according to the website. Around 500 stores will remain after this round of closures, Huffington Post reported.

A store manager at the Buffalo Grove location deferred comment to Blockbuster’s headquarters. A spokesperson could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

The Buffalo Grove store's closure will mark the end of Blockbuster in the village. Blockbusters closed in past years on McHenry Road (now home to American Mattress) and Half Day Road (now occupied by Fitness 19).

The next nearest Blockbuster, on Euclid Road in Palatine, is also closing. Its liquidation sale will end Sunday, an employee said.

Blockbuster also lends videos through kiosks in select markets, but according to its website, there are no video vending machines within 50 miles of Buffalo Grove.

Those who want to rent movies can still find them at Redbox kiosks in Buffalo Grove. The machines are available at Dominick's, Jewel and Walgreens stores in Buffalo Grove and surrounding towns.
