Emergency responders from Buffalo Grove and Long Grove were recognized with special commendations Monday from Fire Chief Terry Vavra.
A Buffalo Grove resident publicly thanked paramedics Monday for saving his life, telling his rescuers, “without you, I probably wouldn’t be standing here.” Matt Rapaport, 33, said he has no recollection of the day in mid-April when he complained of a severe headache and then collapsed in the shower. His wife, Lisa, called 911 and responders from Buffalo Grove and Long Grove came to his rescue. “They found this man not breathing and pulseless on the floor,” Buffalo Grove Fire Chief Terry Vavra said. Crews administered CPR, inserted a tube into his lungs and “shocked his heart” before transporting him to the hospital, the chief said. Rapaport, who awoke a couple of days later with a defibrillator implanted in his chest, was told that his …

A flag was flown this year at a military base in Afghanistan in honor of the fire department.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was honored earlier this year with a U.S. flag flown over a Marine base in Afghanistan. Marine Sgt. William Chapman requested that the flag flown on Feb. 20 be in honor of the department, where his uncles, Jim Hauber and Kevin Hauber, work as firefighters/paramedics. Chapman, along with the Buffalo Grove Honor Guard, presented the flag during Monday night’s Village Board meeting. It will be placed in a case and displayed at the fire station, Chief Terry Vavra said. “It may seem like a fairly ordinary occurrence that the Marines would fly an American flag over their base, and that is true,” Vavra said. “What is striking to me is that this soldier thought about his uncles and the Buffalo Grove Fire …

Trustees, citing safety concerns, delayed action this week on a proposal to bring a recreational trampoline business to the village.
The owner of a recreational trampoline business who hopes to open a location in Buffalo Grove didn’t exactly receive a springboard into the village this week. Village trustees discussed for about an hour on Monday a proposal by Xtreme Trampolines to open a facility at 900 Busch Parkway. After much conversation among the officials and testimonies from the petitioner, residents and a slew of gymnastics professionals who expressed concerns about potential injuries, the board postponed voting on the proposal, instead asking its owner to return with plans for heightened safety. The discussion followed a 6-2 vote against the business by the village’s Plan Commission, which cited concerns about patrons’ safety. Trustees Beverly Sussman and Andrew…

Buffalo Grove will say goodbye next week to three longtime public servants.
The Village of Buffalo Grove recognized three retiring firefighters Monday who have a combined total of nearly 100 years of professional experience. Deputy Chief Daniel Pearson, Battalion Chief Gary Belfield and Public Education Officer Arthur “Skip” Hart were lauded by Fire Chief Terry Vavra for their dedication to the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. (See video.) “These are three absolutely phenomenal firefighters, but more importantly, three phenomenal human beings that this village is going to lose,” Vavra said. “They leave behind so much of what this department now is.” The three received a standing ovation from those in attendance, and were also praised by the Village Board. Pearson and Belfield were among the first full-time …
