Updated: Golf Course Ruling Could Cost Lake County Taxpayers

Decision would take golf courses off tax roll and shift burden to other taxpayers.

  A property tax appeal by Onwentsia Golf Club in Lake Forest could have far reaching effects on Lake County taxpayers as well as communities throughout the state. As the appeal stands, country club land, including improvements such as clubhouses, would be granted open space status and therefore would receive a zero assessment. “The public needs to know what benefits these organizations, country clubs, are getting. Should we be providing tax relief for them?” Lake County Assessor Martin Paulsen said. He said the ruling could result in a significant shift in the tax burden. Equity demands that revenue generating property owned by a tax exempt entity pays taxes similar to that generated by -- in this case -- private golf courses. The owners -- public or private -- are free at any time to sell the property for other development, and so it should be. Lake County Residents Invited to Property Tax Forum

The Oct. 18 event will include direction on how to file a tax appeal.

Lake County residents are invited to attend a property tax forum from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 18 that will include guidance on assessment appeals. The forum will take place at the Vernon Township Community Center, 2900 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove. The informational forum will help residents understand their property assessment and answer questions such as why property taxes continue to increase despite decreasing home values and what homeowners can do to help reduce their property taxes.  Vernon Township Assessor Gary Raupp and Chief County Assessment Officer Marty Paulson will provide one-on-one assistance with the appeal process (the deadline for Vernon Township residents to appeal their assessment is Oct. 29), so attendees are asked to bring a …

The free event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in Rolling Meadows.

Cook County homeowners are invited to attend a property tax appeal seminar geared toward taxpayers seeking to appeal their 2012 property tax assessments. The seminar, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Holiday Inn—Algonquin Room, 3405 Algonquin Road, Rolling Meadows, is co-sponsored by Palatine Township Assessor Terry Kelly, Cook County Commissioner Gregg Goslin, State Senator Matt Murphy and State Representative Tom Morrison. The hourlong session will educate taxpayers on how to file a successful tax appeal in a time when the economy is putting added pressures to home and business owners. Appealing Your Tax Bill? Attend a Seminar

These seminars will provide information for homeowners planning to appeal their property tax assessments.

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak is hosting two seminars that will be offered to residents in the village Buffalo Grove seeking to appeal their 2011 property tax assessments. Along with the participation of local elected officials, the Board of Review hopes that the seminars will educate taxpayers on how to file a successful tax appeal in a time when the economy is putting added pressures on home and business owners. The hour-long session will include a presentation by Patlak that will help taxpayers understand how property taxes are calculated and explain the appeal procedure of the Board of Review.
