SHS Class of 2012 'At the End of One Journey and at the Start of Another'

Graduates commended for contributions to Stevenson High School and the community at large.

Pride from academic successes and hope for the future were the underlying themes of Stevenson High School’s graduation ceremony Thursday night at the Sears Centre. The 90-minute ceremony had a festive atmosphere, with the school's tour orchestra performing songs before the ceremony started. “I’m going to cry, as our babies are grown up,” Liz Goldberg said before the ceremony started. Her children, Illissa and Matthew, were among the school's 1,076 graduates. Many cheered when graduates’ names were called, and some graduates bounced beach balls that were quickly confiscated by teachers. School Board President Bruce Lubin shared the class of 2012’s accomplishments, noting that one student had served as a food pantry coordinator and a second …

Stevenson School Board President Responds to Drug Investigation

School Board President Bruce Lubin read a prepared statement at Monday's meeting.

Stevenson High School Board President Bruce Lubin publicly addressed the drug investigation that was recently conducted by administrators and Lincolnshire police at Monday night's School Board meeting. According to TribLocal, no parents spoke about the investigation during the public comment portion of the meeting. Lubin's response, given on behalf of the School Board, came less than a week after Lincolnshire police announced they had charged two students with unlawful delivery of cannabis and conspiracy of unlawful delivery of cannabis. Lubin's remarks, which follow, were posted Tuesday on Stevenson's website. Some of the comments we’ve heard from concerned community members and parents include why the administration and board hasn’t …

I think creationism or intelligent design is more suited to a college philosophy or world religion class. There young people can hear both sides of the argument and make their own decisions.   more ›

Stein Elected to Village Board, SHS Incumbents Prevail, Library Referendum Passes

Voters also re-elected Village Clerk Janet Sirabian and chose the residents who will represent them on area school boards for the next four years.

Andrew Stein will be the new face on the Buffalo Grove Village Board, voters decided Tuesday. Stein was elected to a two-year term, beating competitor Denice Bocek 2,909 to 1,284, with all precincts in Cook and Lake counties tallied. Meanwhile, Indian Trails Public Library’s referendum squeaked by, with 2,127 votes in favor and 1,983 against the proposal to raise the district’s tax levy. The funds will be used for a variety of facility improvements. Voters largely decided to stay with status quo when it came to other village and school board positions. Incumbent Village Clerk Janet Sirabian breezed her way to a ninth term with about 82 percent of the vote. Sirabian, who has held the position for 32 years, prevailed over challenger Rob …

SHS Candidates Discuss Finances, 'Controversial' Topics

All seven candidates for the District 125 School Board fielded questions at a candidates forum Tuesday night.

The seven candidates for Stevenson High School’s School Board gathered Tuesday night to share their views on questions posed by the school’s Political Action Club. While the students described the event as “a classroom experience,” the forum drew hundreds of residents who nearly filled the school’s recital hall. The students didn’t shy away from the topics that have sparked passionate debate among residents in recent weeks. They posed questions about whether the high school should restrict “controversial material” in the curriculum (see second video) and whether creationism should be taught in the classroom. INTELLIGENT DESIGN “I do not believe intelligent design should be taught in any public high school,” said Kathy Powell who, along …

Yes, Kristin, it has been very quiet with none of the usual suspects posting anything. Having said that, we can't get complacent however since Cardella is an experienced political operative. I suspect that they aren't done yet.   more ›

Village President Endorses District 125 Slate

Letter to the Editor

It's our great schools like Stevenson HS that make our community and our neigboring communities great places to raise our kids. We can't afford to tamper with long standing success. Join me in supporting Merv Roberts, Terry Moons, Bruce Lubin and David Weisberg to insure that SHS remains the high caliber educational institution that has been recognized time and again as one of the best in the nation. As a former Stevenson Board member and as a Mayor, I have worked with them and know these dedicated leaders are a team committed to success for every student. Elliott Hartstein Buffalo Grove
