Why Adults Need A Summer Reading Program, Too
Public libraries don’t forget the adults with their programs - and that’s a good thing.
One of my fondest childhood memories is of participating in the summer reading program through the Chicago Public Library. Library card in hand, I’d march into the Sulzer Regional branch and check out a pile of books - Nancy Drew mysteries, perhaps Harriet the Spy or part of the Little House series, and, if I was feeling rebellious, something by Judy Blume - and leave determined to read as much as possible before my next visit. The way the summer reading program worked was simple: For every book I read, I got a chance to roll the dice and advance a token around a board.
