Observe Yom Kippur 2012 in Buffalo Grove

Find out where and how to observe the Jewish holiday in your community.

Yom Kippur is, in short, the holiest day of the year in Jewish religion and culture. It is also referred to as the “Day of Atonement,” and the tradition is to solemnly fast for repentance and atonement of sins. Yom Kippur marks the end of the annual High Holy Day period (Sept. 16 to Sept. 26 in 2012), which begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. On Sept. 25, observation will begin at sunset. In Buffalo Grove, services will be held at Congregation Beth Am, Congregation B'nai Shalom and BAY Shul. In Long Grove, services will be held at Congregation Beth Judea and Temple Chai. Yom Kippur falls annually on the 10th day of Tishrei, a month on the Hebrew calendar, which is nine days after the first day of Rosh Hashanah. To observe Yom …

Eateries Prepare For Yom Kippur

Owners experience spikes in business during the holiday weekend

As the Jewish High Holidays come to a conclusion at sundown Sept. 18, some Buffalo Grove establishments are preparing for the traditional break-the-fast holiday meal. Original Bagel and Bialy employees are anticipating more than 1,000 customers will walk through the doors this holiday weekend. "This is the busiest time of the year for us," said Ignacio Licea, who has managed the restaurant for seven years. "We have over 250 orders and are preparing over 170 lox trays for pickup and delivery." "Break fast" is typically a light meal of smoked salmon (lox), eggs, soup, bread and cheese.
