Village Board to Vote on Proposed Reprimand

Trustees will decide tonight if Village President Elliott Hartstein deserves admonishment for election night antics.

Buffalo Grove trustees will decide tonight (Nov. 15) whether to reprimand Village President Elliott Hartstein for his election night parody of recalled Trustee Lisa Stone. A proposed resolution admonishing Hartstein has been crafted around the village's 2009 Code of Conduct, which states, in part, that public officials' actions should: Hartstein, who arrived at an election night gathering of recall supporters wearing a jacket and patriotic tie, later donned a black shirt and long-haired wig and performed a parody of Stone. The performance was documented by the media, including Buffalo Grove Patch. The following morning Hartstein issued a public apology, in which he called his behavior "foolish" and said that he "lost sight of what was …

'Leaders Must Set the Example'

Letter to the Editor

This whole Buffalo Grove spectacle only illustrates the poor leadership exhibited by Mr. Hartstein, but more importantly the inability of the board to function as a team and function effectively. The recall, Mr. Hartstein's behavior the other night, and the outbursts of frustration by the board at meetings, demonstrates a lack of leadership and loss of collective control. Quite frankly I am embarrassed to be associated with you and this town based on your actions and inaction. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Leaders must set the example, clearly no one stepped forward the other night except for after the fact to denounce Mr. Hartstein's actions. Letters after the fact are meaningless, action at the time is everything. Jeff what …

Lol - it's not Dr. Hayes....it's Colonel (just promoted to Brig Gen.) Hayes and nice way to talk to a guy who serves tirelessly for our freedom. He might happen to know a lot about how to lead and what represents good or bad leadership. Which part of "Each one of you have demonstrated it is easier to quit on someone when you don't like the fact that their actions don't line up with your beliefs …   more ›

Stone: 'He Can Apologize All He Wants'

Ousted trustee says Hartstein, and most other trustees, should leave office.

Lisa Stone acknowledges that during the 18 months she served as trustee, she attacked Village President Elliott Hartstein for what she says are questionable leadership decisions. But, she emphasizes, she has never "denigrated" him as a person in the way she believes he did when he dressed in a black shirt and wig and delivered a parody of her speech and appearance in front of a crowd of recall supporters, who gathered Tuesday night to await election results. Images from the performance were captured by the media, including Buffalo Grove Patch. Photos and video from Patch were also aired Wednesday night on NBC's local news. "When I first saw it, honestly I felt a little insulted," Stone said. "I can't believe he could be so cruel. I've …

Jack, You don't get it, but you are right about one thing. RelentlessCritic's views of the facts are different from yours. His view is one of actual facts, and you seem to think that if you keep spouting the same lies and innuendos enough times, that they might become facts. I have news for you Jack, they won't. RelentlessCritic, Jack's statement of "No, there will be no debate between you and I…   more ›

Recall Supporter Asks Hartstein to Step Down

Letter to the Editor

Over 9,000 citizens of Buffalo Grove came out to the polls to cast their vote on the recall of Lisa Stone. While I was one of the people seeking the recall of Ms. Stone, I feel obligated to speak out to Mr. Hartstein and the trustees. As a municipal employee for over 30 years with two different municipalities, one of the "commandments" they preached to all employees was that, as an employee, we were extensions of the Village and that, at all times, we should conduct ourselves as if we were representing the Village or City. If I were to get into an argument in public where I worked, it could be mentioned in a news article. If I were picked up DUI, it could be mentioned who I worked for. As a municipal employee or as an elected official of a…

Refreshing perspective - I was starting to wonder if any municipal employee's understood the word professionalism. We all have slanted views of politicians and government as a whole, unfortunately Hartstein just added to our reasons why we dislike and distrust government. Thank you Mr. Jackson for your fair and professional approach to this matter. Although I don't support recall in any way, …   more ›

'Horrified at the Sight'

Jeffrey Berman is a Buffalo Grove trustee. He submitted this letter as a citizen, and not in the capacity of his leadership role. His views do not reflect the opinions of the village.

On Tuesday, the voters of this community took an historic step, voting overwhelmingly to recall an elected Trustee from office. They spoke forcefully at the polls, demanding an end to unprofessional conduct and unproductive rancor.   Wednesday should have been a day when the community could breathe a sigh of relief and begin to look forward to a more positive and productive period of Village government. Unfortunately, instead, we have been forced to try to ponder the imponderable, explain the inexplicable and defend the indefensible. Why did the Village President choose to put on a wig and deride the recalled Trustee on Tuesday evening?  It is important to note that Elliott [Hartstein] conceived and executed his "parody" alone; I certainly…

I agree with you. How do you turn off being a village official to make comments and then turn it back on? It doesn't work that way--these folks are public officials. Every waking moment their actions reflect on this village. I also agree with Erica--Janet, you need to retire.   more ›

The Verdict's In — Stone is Out

Buffalo Grove voters supported the recall of Trustee Lisa Stone by about 69 percent.

Buffalo Grove's embattled trustee will have to battle no longer. Residents on Tuesday voiced their displeasure with Lisa Stone's representation at the polls, with about 69 percent of voters opposing her continued service to the village. With all 38 precincts counted, unofficial tallies showed voters supported Stone's removal 8,728 to 3,853. The outcome of the recall — thought to be the first in state history — means that Stone will be forced to step down from the dais just 18 months into what was supposed to be a four-year term as trustee. Stone, who has prided herself on being a champion for the community and an advocate for transparency in government, has said repeatedly that her uphill battle has been in the name of open, honest …
