Take Sneak Peek at Vernon Area Library Improvements

Some Vernon Area Public Library patrons got a sneak peek at the newly renovated building. Patch brings you an inside look.

 With just a week left until its public reopening, Vernon Area Public Library welcomed a VIP crowd of library volunteers, staff and their families Tuesday night for a sneak peek at its newly renovated facility. Patrons were all smiles as they perused the building, which has been transformed into a more contemporary facility, complete with new shelving, seating, rooms and paint. “If the reaction of the general public is anything like it was last night, it will be really fun,” library spokeswoman Catherine Savage said. The $1.3 million renovations, which repurposed some staff space, resulted in almost 1,800 additional square feet for patrons. “Every patron space got improved in some way,” Savage said. Vernon Library to Close Tuesday, Prepare to Reopen

The Vernon Area Public Library will completely shut down to the public Tuesday night in preparation for the main building's reopening next week.

Need library materials? Get them now! Vernon Area Public Library’s branches will close for a week beginning Tuesday evening as staff members prepare to reopen the main building after more than two months of renovation. The library has operated out of a scaled-back “library to go” in the annex building behind the library since construction began in early March. The annex will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and staff will spend the week transferring materials back to the main building.  The renovated main building will reopen May 28 with a new self-service café, a quiet reading room with a fireplace, and new dedicated areas for teens, early readers and group study. Vernon Area Library to Close for 3-Month Remodeling Project

The library's main building will close beginning March 5, but patrons will still have access to materials via a smaller "Library to Go."

The Vernon Area Public Library's main building will close for remodeling beginning March 5. Patrons will have continued access to books, DVDs, games, and other materials via a “Library to Go” to be operated out of the former library building on Indian Creek Road. The $1.3 million renovation package was approved in January by the library’s Board of Trustees. Planned improvements include a new self-service café, a quiet reading room with a fireplace, and new dedicated areas for teens, early readers, and group study. The public restrooms will also be refinished.  The 50,000-square foot main library is expected to reopen by the end of May. During the construction period, library patrons will be able to access materials via the “Library to Go” …

Vernon Library Organization Offers $2,000 Scholarship

High school seniors are encouraged to apply by March 1.

Area high school students are invited to apply for the annual $2,000 Friends of the Vernon Area Library Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship. To qualify, applicants must live within the Vernon Area Public Library District, be in their senior year of high school, and have been accepted into a higher education program for the 2013-14 school year. They also must be able to describe in an essay how the library has affected their life or educational goals. Applicants should submit a completed online form, a letter of reference, a letter of acceptance and a copy of the student’s most recent high school transcripts. Legislative Breakfast to Address Library Issues

The Illinois Library Association's annual event will take place Feb. 18 at the Arboretum Club.

The Vernon Area Public Library will co-host the 23rd annual Presidents’ Day Library Legislative Breakfast Feb. 18 at the Arboretum Club. Organized by the Illinois Library Association (ILA), this annual event brings more than 100 library representatives together with the legislative leadership for the north and northwest suburbs to discuss issues affecting local libraries.  Among the issues expected to be discussed with lawmakers are the impact of the continuing budget crisis on Illinois libraries, as well as significant challenges to intellectual freedom and the ongoing effort to reform state and local pension programs.
