Vernon Area Library’s fall Used Book Sale will be held from Oct. 19–21 and Oct. 27 in the library's technical services building. Thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles, children’s books, CDs, DVDs, books on tape and special collection items will be available at the sale. There is no fee to enter at any time. The sale opens to the public at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 and runs until 9 p.m. It continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20. On “Bargain Sunday,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 21, all remaining items will be sold for half-price. On “Box Sale Saturday,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27, remaining items will be sold for $10 per box. The book sale is the primary fundraising activity of the Friends of the Vernon Area Library. Aspiring novelists of all ages are invited to unleash their creativity in November during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) at the Vernon Area Public Library.

NaNoWriMo is an annual international fiction-writing extravaganza that encourages writers to create a novel in 30 days — all for the fun of it. Aspiring authors from third grade to adult are welcome. Adult participants pledge to write 50,000 words in a month, starting from scratch and reaching “The End” by Nov. 30. The Vernon Area Library will provide writers with space, mentoring by local authors, camaraderie, and refreshments to keep them fueled. Write-ins and programming will provide a supportive environment, turning the usually solitary act of writing into a community experience. The Young Writers Program version of the event, geared for kids and teens, allows writers to set reasonable, yet challenging, individual word-count goals. …

The Vernon Area Library Board welcomed Vernon Hills resident Edward B. Kogan as a new trustee July 16. Kogan fills a vacancy on the board created in June by the resignation of longtime board member Elizabeth “Betty” Stover. Kogan was selected from among the pool of prospective trustees who applied for a previous opening on the board; that vacancy was filled in March by Long Grove resident Ed Acuna. When Stover announced her resignation, the board decided to draw from that same pool of applicants to fill this position. Kogan has more than 10 years of professional experience with corporate library informatics and in educational libraries, including the John Crerar Library at University of Chicago and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business …

Long Grove resident Ed Acuna has been appointed to the Vernon Area Public Library Board. He fills a vacant seat on the board created by a resignation earlier this year. Acuna was selected from among 13 applicants for the position. He holds a master’s degree in management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and a master’s and bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served on the Village of Long Grove Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2011 and the Village of Long Grove Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals from 2001-2007. Residents of the Vernon Area Public Library District interested in serving as a library trustee are invited to submit an application by Feb. 27. The Library Board is seeking to fill a vacancy created this month by the resignation of Buffalo Grove resident Akrom Hossain. The vacancy will be filled by appointment, in accordance with Illinois statute and the library’s bylaws. To qualify to serve, an applicant must reside within the Vernon Area Public Library District and be registered to vote. A Petition for Nomination is not required for this appointment. English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the Vernon Area Public Library wrapped up their fall semester last week with a multicultural holiday celebration. The students each brought a dish to share from their country of origin, creating a smorgasbord reflective of the class’s diversity: Japanese sushi, Indian “seven cup” cake, Chinese shao raisin cake and more. English as a Second Language is offered at the Vernon Area Public Library free of charge through a regional program coordinated by the Adult and Continuing Education department at Mundelein High School, and funded by a state and federal grant.
