Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth of the 8th District participated in the National Day of Service commemoration Saturday, and encouraged all Americans to find some way to serve others. “There are so many great ways to serve your country,” Duckworth said. “Whether it’s volunteering at a soup kitchen or nursing home, tutoring at a school, or helping to build affordable housing. “We all have a responsibility to go into our communities and make a difference,” she said. Results came in quickly Tuesday night, and by 10:15 p.m. Duckworth was the clear winner.
Update 12:00 a.m. Republican Congressman Joe Walsh knew Cook County would be a challenge in his quest for the 8th Congressional seat, but he and his staffers hoped conservative voters from DuPage and Kane County would offset that obstacle. That was not the case on Tuesday. With 409 of the 430 precincts reporting election results by 11 p.m., Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth held 56.3 of the votes and Walsh had 43.7. Duckworth had 116,872 votes to Walsh's 97,331 at that time. DuPage County numbers were slightly closer; Duckworth grabbing 52 percent of the votes to Walsh's 48 percent - with all precincts from that county reporting. Thousands of dollars have been donated, and thousands of phone calls made to help clinch the 8th Congressional District seat currently held by freshman republican Joe Walsh, the Chicago Tribune reports. Both democratic challenger, Tammy Duckworth and Walsh each have received substantial support from their party's Super PAC's, but the Chicago Tribune reports Walsh has outspent Duckworth by thousands.

With the November 6 election just days away, the barbs between incumbent Congressman Joe Walsh and his opponent Tammy Duckworth appear to be at a fever pitch. Walsh has called into question Duckworth's firing of two state employees when she ran the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, CBS reports. Congressman Joe Walsh announced Thursday he will not attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay in August, according to a news release from his campaign. Instead, the 8th district Republican candidate will host a series of town hall meetings and listening events in the district. "Rather than mingle with Party insiders in Tampa, I will be in the 8th district to continue to serve as an independent voice for for the people," Walsh said in a statement. Democratic 8th Congressional District candidate Tammy Duckworth has raised a record amount of money in the second quarter, her campaign said. Duckworth, who is running against Republican Joe Walsh, will report raising at least $885,540 for the second quarter of 2012, her strongest fundraising quarter yet. Her campaign said this is believed to be the highest quarter for any House challenger from either party. Nearly 92 percent of the individual contributions Duckworth received this quarter were for $100 or less, with the average individual contribution being $79.97.
