This new business, inspired by a 13-year-old and led by Long Grove and Buffalo Grove residents, specializes in clothing for youths being treated for scoliosis.
For the past year, Hope Schneider has had a hard time figuring out what to wear. Like any teen, she wants fashionable, flattering apparel. Finding the right fit is more difficult for her than for most because she needs clothing to go under and over the brace she wears for about 18 hours each day to treat her scoliosis. Particularly challenging while shopping in retail stores is finding tank tops that will shield her skin from the hard brace. Some have armholes that are too large, resulting in abrasions where the brace touches Schneider’s skin. Some are made of material that is quickly punctured by the brace. Others are made of thicker material that don’t let her skin breathe. And the rest, she said, are just plain unattractive. “There was …

Michelle Fujioka is the owner of the newly launched Mon Ami Macaron.
When life delivers a lemon, some make lemonade. Buffalo Grove resident Michelle Fujioka makes lemon macarons. And chocolate, coffee, mango, strawberry and vanilla ones, too. Fujioka is the owner of Mon Ami Macaron, a French cookie business she launched this year. She found herself with the time to pursue this passion after her husband’s business closed. It was, she said, a blessing in disguise. Fujioka is a longtime fan of the delicate treats, which she discovered during a trip to Paris about 12 years ago. “You bite into them and they are just so delicious,” she said. Back in the U.S., “I looked, but I couldn’t find many places around here” that sold macarons, she said. But she encountered a variation of them on a cruise ship, and also …

Lake Zurich business owner is first female to play in the All-Star game for the Midwest Suburban League (MSL).
Go Hardball co-owner Kate Mitchum reached a big personal goal this summer when she was chosen by her teammates to play in the Midwest Suburban League All-Star game. The weekend of the All-Star game in July was made doubly special because it was the same weekend her father, Charles Mitchum, was inducted into the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame. Kate grew up in upstate New York in an athletic family. She always loved baseball and played Little League t-ball as a child. “I wanted to continue playing Little League, but they said ‘Girls don’t play baseball.’ So I quit and grew up playing soccer,’ Kate said. After high school, Kate moved to Chicago to study theater at Columbia College and she also completed the Second City program. “I liked …

The Vernon Hills location held its ribbon-cutting ceremony July 27; grand opening is today, July 28.
Real Urban Barbecue's official grand opening in Vernon Hills won't be held until noon today, July 28, but the restaurant has already seen large, enthusiastic crowds all week. One day was so busy that owner Jeff Shapiro was forced to post "sold out" signs on the door when they ran out of meat. "We've done virtually no advertising," said Shapiro. The restaurant, located at the Vernon Hills Town Center at Routes 21 and 45, doesn't even have its official signage up yet. "We have had record crowds," said Shapiro. The restaurant held a soft opening the weekend of July 21-22. "We don't know where they're all coming from. We've been so crowded that we couldn't possibly get another person in the restaurant." What they're coming to Real Urban …

Just Kids Store offers a variety of toys, strollers and safety products for children in a uniquely designed setting.
Parents and caregivers in Buffalo Grove no longer need to travel to Davy Jones’s locker, or at least to other suburbs, to find new car seats, strollers and LEGO sets. Specific product lines include Melissa & Doug, Baby Björn, and LEGOs. Puppets, toy trucks and trains and licensed products featuring Thomas the Tank are also for sale. Swad of India, which is run by a suburban family, offers a variety of Indian food and beverages.
A new Indian restaurant in Buffalo Grove gives diners a chance to sample a variety of authentic food and beverages. The family-owned Swad of India opened in May at the southwest corner of Weiland Road and Deerfield Parkway. Meals are prepared by family patriarch Mangubhai Patel and the business is run by his son, restaurant manager Jitendra Patel, along with Jitendra’s brother, Pankaj, and cousin, Mitesh. While the family members individually have previous restaurant experience, Swad of India is the family’s first venture together. “We just decided we’ll try it, we’ll give it a shot. Until you try, you don’t know,” said Jitendra Patel. The 29-year-old worked in a restaurant a decade ago, but most recently served customers through Des …

Ron Griffin will make some changes, but leave much the same, at the Mexican restaurant in Buffalo Grove.
Ron Griffin is among the newest faces in Buffalo Grove’s restaurant scene. The veteran chef is the new owner of Las Palmas Mexican Restaurant and Bar. Griffin, who has spent 35 years in the restaurant business, worked for the past 27 years for Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. He served as chef, food and beverage director and finally general manager, overseeing a staff of 178, before leaving to run his own restaurant. “I just wanted to have a business,” said Griffin, who lives in Palatine. He estimated he looked at 50 to 60 restaurants before deciding to purchase Las Palmas. “It’s kind of like buying a house. You get that feeling of warmth when you walk in,” he said. “I looked at the customer service, wait staff, the atmosphere …

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at Buffalo Grove's own chocolate factory.
When you enter the Long Grove Confectionery’s production facility, the first thing you notice is the aroma of chocolate. The 85,000-square-foot building is Buffalo Grove’s answer to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Inside, pretzels, caramels, nuts and other treats roll down conveyor belts, as they journey to a chocolate-covered future. (See video.) “People don’t have any idea how much work goes into a piece of candy before they get to eat it,” said Ann Holterman, the confectionery’s human resources manager. While absent of Oompa Loompas, the factory on Lexington Drive does employ a staff of 120, which includes about 70 who work in production. The factory uses 1 million pounds of chocolate each year, Holterman said. While candy centers, …
