Leave your old CTA smartphone app in the dust, because these siblings are focused on making Chicago's commute simpler, and to help with the No. 11 bus cancellation.
Forget the consistently wrong bus schedules and the need to be a seasoned Chicagoan to figure out all the public transportation tricks, because two Lake View siblings have created a tool to make navigating the city a bit more – visual. Shayna Hirsch, 28, and her brother Robert, 31, have spent the last year and a half developing ziptrip, a new smartphone application aimed at smoothing out the sometimes wonky commutes with the Chicago Transit Authority. Unlike current apps with seemingly endless lists of bus stops or a constant need to refresh the app to update the data, the Hirsches, formerly of Buffalo Grove, created an interactive map that recognizes where the commuter is standing in the city and plots out all the area bus stops. “There …

Where are you shopping today?
Today is Small Business Saturday, a day aimed at supporting locally owned shops after hitting national retailers for Black Friday bargains. There's no shortage of privately owned stores and restaurants in the Buffalo Grove area, and many of them have been featured on Patch. Take a look back at some of our local business coverage: For a complete list of Buffalo Grove businesses, peruse Patch's directory, where you can find information about the location, store hours, and more. If you've visited a particular business, give them a shout out by leaving a review on their listing. This lets others in the community know what kind of experience their neighbors had, and is another way of supporting our local merchants on this day and every other …

The Grayslake winery is part of an industry empire that dates back more than a century in the Chicago area.
At first glance Glunz Family Winery and Cellars at 888 E. Belvidere Rd appears to be anything but a winery and tasting room. Centered in a brown brick office park, Suite 211 boasts a large sign bearing the business name, but little else. Step inside though and you are steeped in the quaint shop that is the Tasting Room, where you can sample a few varietals, peek in back at the aging barrels of fortified wines, and get a quick lesson on the family legacy that has made this winery a success. A Rich History in Wine Production The Glunz family history is a long and successful one dating back to the late 1800's when Louis Glunz I came to Chicago from Germany. After working for a local brewery, Glunz saved his wages to open his own business in …

Repairhub, a new site started by Buffalo Grove resident Garry Rosenfeldt, makes it easier to find local service shops and book appointments.
When your car needs maintenance or a repair, where do you turn? Garry Rosenfeldt wants to take the hassle out of finding reputable service shops and making appointments. The Buffalo Grove resident launched this month Repairhub, a website that makes it easy for vehicle owners to make such arrangements. “It was kind of a no-brainer,” Rosenfeldt said of his venture. “People hate calling around town to find a mechanic.” Rosenfeldt know this because he spent nine years as the director of marketing research at Midas, where he conducted focus groups. He recalls asking participants what they looked for when searching online for auto service shops. Their responses, he said, were always the same, and he took them into account when designing …

AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong gives advice to small business owners via Patch Partners.
There are several small businesses in Buffalo Grove. Some of them may be places you and your family frequent, businesses that have been in Buffalo Grove for as long as you can remember. And some may be your go-to places instead of national chains. AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong may stand behind a global brand, but he believes in the power of small businesses. In his recent interview with Patch Partners, a website connecting business owners to Patch in local communities, he offered his insight into what can set a small business above the rest of the competition. Small businesses can hold a lot of power if they are intuitive with their customer base, Armstrong said. “Small businesses can be nimble and can have intimate relationships with…

Jamal Amr is putting his best effort into Buffalo Grove's new Mediterranean restaurant.
Affordable, high-quality food and top-notch customer service are the recipe for success, according to Jamal Amr, owner of Buffalo Grove’s new Firewood Kabob Mediterranean Grill. The restaurant, which serves wood-fire grilled meats in Mediterranean dishes, opened Sept. 24. Amr said he uses only fresh meat, which is cooked on the restaurant’s wood-fire grill. Most Mediterranean restaurants charbroil their meat, he said. Using a wood-fire grill eliminates “the nasty fumes from the gas,” he said. The wood gives Firewood Kabob’s meat “a natural seasoning,” said Amr, who pointed out that most firewood restaurants are considerably more expensive. But the flavor doesn’t stop with the wood. Chicken, for instance, is marinated in a blend of extra …

Many business have left the shopping center since its owner announced redevelopment plans this summer.
The Cambridge Commons shopping center has nearly emptied in recent weeks, as its owner prepares to redevelop it with a grocery store as the new anchor. Vacant storefronts remain where Pho U, Chaihanna, Cambridge Cleaners and Tailors, and other businesses once operated. Cash for Gold is the only Cambridge Commons business that has applied with the village to relocate, said Village Manager Dane Bragg. The operation has moved to 80 W. Dundee Road. A sign in Pho U’s window tells customers that the restaurant closed Sept. 30 and that it will post on Yelp “if we open at another location.” At Chaihanna, a sign instructs people to watch its Facebook page "for any future updates.” Currently, only Rogan’s Shoes, Little Caesar’s and Illinois Dental…

The theater is running a fundraiser to help it generate money to convert its films to digital technology.
Buffalo Grove Theater is asking for the community’s support as it works to raise the $300,000 it needs to remain open. The money would cover the cost of the digital equipment that all theaters will soon require in order to show movies Traditional 35-millimeter film will be unavailable by the end of next year. Buffalo Grove Theater still projects its movies with film. Owner Debbie Benjamin said she must raise the money by March, and have the new digital equipment in place soon after, to keep the five-screen theater open. Otherwise, she said, “it’s basically a countdown to the end.” To raise money, the theater is selling admission and concession packages. The offers, which range from $25 to $1,000, include admission tickets and refreshments…

Spiteful Brewing could be one of Chicago’s smallest brewers, and its owners are ready to take on the local craft beer scene.
At the corner of Ravenswood and Bertau avenues where Lake View, North Center and Ravenswood meet lies what could be one of the smallest official breweries in Chicago. And starting next week, it’ll officially be pumping out beer. Spiteful Brewing is the product of three years of hard work and sacrifice for longtime friends Jason Klein, 30, and Brad Shaffer, 29. After meeting more than 15 years ago during a childhood hockey game, the Buffalo Grove natives are taking their friendship to the next level by opening a small business – 380 square feet, to be exact. “I moved back to Chicago three years ago after living in Boulder, CO,” said Shaffer, who learned tricks of the trade while working at Pipeworks Brewing in Bucktown. “I was unemployed, …
