Poll: Should Armed Guards Be In Every School?

The NRA reacted to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by suggesting a variety of causes for mass shootings and suggesting that armed police officers be station in every school.

The NRA called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around U.S. schools Friday in the group's first public statement since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." A gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conneticut on Dec. 14. Twenty of the victims were children. The shooting has ignited a debate over gun control. Vice President Joe Biden will lead the Obama administrations efforts on the issue, CNN reported. The NRA, however, argued that more guns, not less, is the answer to mass shootings. "We …

Teachers, Administrators in Newtown Acted Heroically But That's No Surprise

Extraordinary bravery is ordinary for teachers.

Like the rest of the nation, I was shocked and saddened by the horrific events in Newtown that took the lives of 20 innocent children.  What did not surprise me were the actions of the teachers and school personnel who died trying to protect them. We have all heard the stories by now — the principal and school psychologist running into gunfire in an effort to disarm the lunatic who invaded their school, the teachers who died protecting their students, and the students who did not die because of the quick thinking and bravery of their teachers.   Of all the adjective others would use to describe me, brave is not on the list. However, as a teacher, I am certain I would have done the same as the teachers did in Newtown. I’m not saying this …

Letters to the Editor

'Meaningful Gun Control' is Needed

Letter to the editor

The tragedy of [Dec. 14] at Shady Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn was horrific and beyond belief. Our hearts should grieve and we should pray for the families who have to deal with the loss of all of their loved ones and the especially sad and tragic loss of so many innocent young children. We all need to hug our own kids and grandkids and our own loved ones every time we can since unspeakable things do happen that in our wildest dreams we could never imagine. Though we can probably never do anything that will completely prevent tragedies like the one of yesterday we need to think of ways that can mitigate to the maximum such horrible events that we have seen too often. We need to really take action on meaningful gun control that …

Buffalo Grove-Area Schools Discuss Safety Plans

School officials respond to the Dec. 14 shootings in Connecticut.

At least two Buffalo Grove area schools districts made little fuss during the school day as word spread about the school shootings in Connecticut that left 27 dead. “It’s not the kind of thing where we’d turn on the (TV) monitors,” Stevenson spokesman Jim Conrey said. On Friday, District 96’s elementary and middle schools focused on their regular routines, spokeswoman Betsy Fresen said, but she expects conversation about the shootings to occur next week. “I’m sure that they’ll be addressing this in the days ahead,” she said. Principals will work with their staffs to ensure support for their schools is in place, though Fresen could not say Friday what those plans might entail. District 96 does have safety procedures in place, Fresen said, …

I have on several occasions walked into Stevenson without a pass and without being stopped or questioned. Just last year while volunteering as a chaperone, I walked in the doors at the point where there is a security desk and bought a coffee from the shop in the cafeteria. While in line, I chatted with several teachers. This was not some kind of test; this was me at 7:30 in the morning …   more ›

NEWTOWN, CT -- Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location.   The Scene Police in Newtown were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call Friday morning. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. Your posts are getting more enigmatic. Are you trying to imply that I have been arrested for inappropriate actions with children? That's quite the serious accusation and extremely inappropriate, but I would expect nothing less from you. I have no reason to believe that you aren't what you say you are, but I'm amazed that you had a business in 50 states and however many countries when you treat …   more ›
