A number of local school districts have sent letters to parents or posted notices on their websites.
Leaders of some local school districts have reached out to parents in the wake of Friday’s shootings in Connecticut. In letters to parents, districts assure parents that they have safety plans in place and that resources are available to students who want to talk about last week's events. “We want to assure you that District 96 takes the safety of all staff and students very seriously,” Superintendent Julie Schmidt wrote to parents. “While there is no plan that can totally prevent an act of senseless violence like this, our safety plan has been reviewed by law enforcement authorities and is diligently practiced by our staff and students. Community members are invited to attend one of these three programs. The first one will take place Sept. 27.
School District 21 will kick off its three annual State of the Schools events for parents and community members tonight (Sept. 27) at London Middle School. Programs will also be held Oct. 4 at Holmes Middle School and Oct. 10 at Cooper Middle School. Each event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature student performances, remarks from Superintendent Kate Hyland, a State of the Schools video and a presentation on bullying prevention by University of Illinois Professor Dorothy Espelage. The events are open to all parents and community members, and babysitting will be provided for elementary school-age children.

In accordance with state law, School District 21 will hold a public hearing on Aug. 16 to allow public comment on the district's plans to hold classes on two legal holidays during the 2012-13 school year. The hearing will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Gill Administration Center, 999 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling. According to IL Public Act 096-0640, school districts are required to hold a public hearing when school calendars include student attendance on legal school holidays. Kate Hyland replaces Gary Mical, who retired after 10 years at the helm.
School District 21 will start the 2012-13 school year with a new superintendent. Kate Hyland, who was previously the district’s associate superintendent for curriculum and learning, took the helm July 1. She replaces Gary Mical, who retired this summer after 10 years as the district’s superintendent. “I am very grateful to have been able to work with such fine people who serve our students and community. They are people who care about children and the people who live in our community,” Mical wrote in the district’s summer newsletter, which is mailed to residents. Students from School District 21 competed at the Northshore Jazz Festival on Jan. 21. Cooper Middle School, Holmes Middle School, and London Middle School all participated. The groups competed against numerous schools from around the Chicago area and did an outstanding job representing Wheeling School District 21. Cooper Middle School Jazz Band I placed 1st in the jazz band one division for the fifth year in a row and Holmes Middle School Jazz Band I placed 4th in the jazz band one division. In the second jazz band division, Holmes Middle School Jazz Band II placed 1st, London Middle School Jazz Band II placed 2nd, and Cooper Middle School Jazz Band II placed 3rd. First-grader Dalton Hinkle passed away over the weekend.
A first-grader at Longfellow School died suddenly over the weekend, School District 21 officials said today (Monday). Longfellow parents received automated phone calls Sunday from the school district, notifying them that Dalton Hinkle had passed away. District 21 Assistant Superintendent Candace Thompson said the cause of Dalton’s death has not been determined, but that the Cook County Health Department told school officials that “there’s no need for precautionary measures” at the school. Social workers were available to Longfellow students and staff today, Thompson said, and will be on hand Tuesday as well. All after-school activities at Stevenson today (Jan. 20) have been canceled, including athletic events. Due to weather conditions, District 96 middle school buses will leave the schools 15 minutes early today. This will allow the bus drivers extra time to complete their middle school routes and return to elementary buildings to help ensure that elementary and kindergarten routes will begin at their regular time. For safety and supervision reasons, elementary and kindergarten students’ buses will depart at the regular time. All after-school activities have been canceled, including the middle school ski trip to Wilmot Mountain due to hazardous road conditions both locally and near Wilmot.
