Stevenson Students Plan Basketball Game Fundraisers

Two organizations will hold fundraisers during games Friday and Tuesday nights.

Heading to a Stevenson High School basketball game? Members of two clubs at the school are asking fans to bring along a little extra money to support their charitable fundraisers. The school’s Relay for Life committee is starting its fundraising this year by holding “Hoops for Hope” events at the sophomore and varsity boys basketball games against Libertyville on Friday. The sophomore game is at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7:30. Both games will be played in the Sports Center. Walgreens Puts Corporate Citizenship on Display

Toys for Tots is just one of many ways the Deerfield based company gets involved in local communities.

Walgreens corporate citizenship was on display Monday when employees at the company’s Deerfield corporate headquarters helped two United States Marines load a truck full of holiday gifts as part of the Toys for Tots program. The drive took place not only at the corporate headquarters but at Walgreens 8,000 stores throughout the country with the toys staying in the local communities throughout the nation. Earlier: Cancer Survivors Unify With a Purpose The Toy for Tots partnership with the United States Marine Corps and the Ellen DeGeneres show is just one example of Walgreens’ effort to be a giving member of not just the North Suburban community, but all over the United States. “We want to help our local communities,” Director of Cause …

Stevenson High School Hosts Relay For Life June 15-16

American Cancer Society fundraiser now in its 28th year started with an idea from a Washington doctor who wanted to do more in the fight against the disease.

The origins of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life date back to 1985, when a Tacoma, Washington doctor decided he would run for an entire day to raise money in the fight against cancer. “Dr. Gordy Klatt started Relay as one man with a vision; he raised money for cancer research by running around a track for 24 hours to symbolize that cancer never sleeps,” said Carley Alcorn, Relay for Life development representative. Klatt was able to raise $27,000 that day, with the support of friends, family and others who each paid $25 to run 30 minutes with him. The Relay For Life since then has grown into a worldwide event that touches hundreds of thousands of people fighting cancer, those who have friends or loved ones battling the disease and…

More than 500 people gathered Friday night at Buffalo Grove High School for the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life, a 12-hour walk aimed at raising money to find a cure for the disease. Camping out overnight on the infield of school’s football stadium, students from Buffalo Grove and Stevenson high schools turned the track into a tent city as some walked all night while others played Frisbee and tossed around footballs and baseballs. Danelle Laumeyer, staff partner with the American Cancer Society, said 60 teams from the two schools and local community groups registered for the event. One of the youngest was 3-and-a-half-year-old Zachary Neukirch, who is a Relay for Life veteran, according to his mom. “He has been coming since…
