Regional Police Report: Feds Say Former Police Commander Lied About DUI Arrests and More

Des Plaines Feds: Former Police Commander Inflated DUI Arrests A former Des Plaines police commander has been charged with falsifying records to obtain grant funding for overtime pay following an investigation by the city, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Wednesday. Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect, a 31-year law enforcement veteran, is accused of inflating the number of DUI arrests that would qualify for the federal funds from 30 to 152, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between 2009 and 2012. The false information Veit provided, according to the charges, caused a loss of $132,893 in federal funds that were reimbursed to Des Plaines for impaired driving enforcement programs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office …

Regional Police Report: Woman Killed by Car Backing Out of Driveway and More

Palatine Woman Killed by Car Backing Out of Driveway The investigation continues into an accident that claimed the life of a 77-year-old Palatine woman. According to a press release from Palatine Police, Jieru Chen and her husband were walking in the 400 block of N. Hicks near Northwest Highway on Wednesday at 12:01 p.m., when a car backing up in a private driveway hit the couple.  Police have determined that the 1998 Chevy Malibu driven by a 42-year-old female was the vehicle involved in the accident. The driver told police she was backing up slowly eastbound out of an apartment complex and did not see anyone in her path, or feel any impact when the couple is believed to have been hit. Northbrook Police Officer Resigns Amid Burglary Charges Enrique Guzman, the Northbrook police officer who was charged with robbing a home while on duty last week, submitted his resignation from the department on Feb. 4, Village Hall announced.  Guzman "is no longer an employee of the Village," the release states.  According to Northbrook Village President Sandy Frum, the state's attorney asked village officials to refrain from commenting on the case while the investigation continues. Guzman was arrested after the FBI placed three hidden cameras in a home he was dispatched to investigate, the Chicago Tribune reports. Thanks Pete. Just curious what constitutes aggression. If someone shot my small dog for stepping on a neighboring lawn for what they deemed as aggression, we would have a huge problem. This is the issue as I see it...What would stop a neighbor from saying that a child, or adult, on their property was showing aggression, thus, shooting that child or adult? This is a slippery slope. Niles Out-of-Control School Bus Hits Six Cars An out-of-control school bus, empty except for the driver, careened down Oakton Street and hit about six other vehicles Tuesday, just before 2:30 p.m. The bus traveled more than a mile westbound from about Milwaukee Avenue to Greenwood Avenue through Niles and Park Ridge, according to Park Ridge Police Commander Lou Jogmen. It traveled in the oncoming traffic lanes.  The driver may have been suffering from a medical condition, he said. Minor injuries were reported. Park Ridge police got a call at 2:29 p.m. indicating the bus had struck a vehicle at Oakton Street at Oriole. Cops: Sex Offender Robbed Waitress, Family A Tennessee convict is ordered held in lieu of $1 million after storming into the Lake View restaurant Cassava Bread Sunday night and robbing a waitress, a Buffalo Grove mother and her two children, the Chicago Tribune reports. William Castle, 43, was charged with aggravated robbery, unlawful restraint and aggravated kidnapping, police said. He is also on Tennessee’s sexual offender registry for aggravated sexual battery in 2009. Police say the Buffalo Grove family was eating at the Lake View bakery at 3338 N. Grayslake Two Men Survive Fiery Crash Two men are lucky to be alive after the car they were in struck a guardrail, rolled over and became engulfed in flames. The Lake County Sheriff's Department responded to the crash about 3:15 a.m. Thursday on Rollins Road west of Route 45. According to the release a black Mercedes SUV traveling Eastbound Rollins Rd West of RT 45 struck a guard rail on the North side of the road.  The vehicle overturned once and became engulfed in flames.  The driver Justin Schulze, 23, of the 18000 Block of Lindenwood Dr Wildwood and passenger John Bruhn, 29, unknown address, were able to exit the vehicle.  The two were transported to Condell Hospital. Des Plaines Man Punched in Mouth at Library A patron sitting in the hallway of the first floor of the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 E. Ellinwood St., reported another patron told him to mind his own business and punched him in the mouth after he asked the man to stop shouting on his cell phone at 3:11 p.m. on Dec. 26, police stated. The man was described as 45-55 years old, 6-foot 2-inches tall, 200 pounds, with a medium build, medium brown complexion, brown eyes, wearing dark clothing. Arlington Heights Several Guns Taken in Burglary Several guns were stolen from a home in the 200 block of N. Lincoln Lane during a residential burglary Saturday, Dec. 23. According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the unknown offender or offenders forced open a first floor bedroom window and entered the house while the homeowner was out walking their dog. Five handguns were stolen from the basement of the home and a 55-inch Sony television was taken from the living room during the residential burglary, police said. Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery.
