Thursday, February 14
Attorney General Lisa Madigan today joined a $29 million, multi-state settlement with Toyota Motor Corporation over its failure to alert motorists to dangerous safety defects that caused millions of vehicles to unintentionally accelerate. “In spite of the evidence that millions of vehicles had serious defects, Toyota continued to promote and sell cars that put its customers in great danger,” Madigan said. Madigan and the states allege Toyota officials were aware of the defects that caused millions of its vehicles, including the Camry, Corolla and Prius, to unintentionally accelerate but failed to alert the public and continued to market and advertise Toyota vehicles as safe. The defects led to wide-ranging recalls of its vehicles in late…

Members of the citizens group have expressed concerns about the proposal and say they are considering taking steps to recall some elected officials.
Buffalo Grove residents who are concerned about the proposed downtown development have established an opposition group called Save Buffalo Grove and say they are prepared to circulate petitions to recall some Village Board members who have expressed early support for the proposal. “We have been very alarmed by some comments from the Village of Buffalo Grove about the development plan,” Dan Peterson, one of the group’s organizers, said in a statement released Oct. 2 to Patch. “In particular, one trustee said he ‘started to drool’ when seeing the concept, while others were already talking about ‘moving in’ or ‘shopping’ at the development. These kinds of comments are premature, at best.” “The Buffalo Grove community is being blindsided by …

Though still officially a trustee, she attended Monday's meeting to speak out as a resident.
Although Trustee Lisa Stone officially holds her position until recall votes are certified by Cook and Lake counties, her seat was conspicuously empty at Monday night's Buffalo Grove Village Board meeting. "She was welcome to be on this dais. That was her personal choice," Village President Elliott Hartstein said. Stone did briefly attend the meeting; however, she sat in the audience and stepped up to the podium during the public comment portion of the agenda. She did not address her absence from the dais, the Nov. 2 recall outcome or the proposed reprimand of Hartstein. Instead, she used the time to reiterate her belief that the Village Board should have aired the Nov. 9 hearing conducted by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency on…

Trustees will decide tonight if Village President Elliott Hartstein deserves admonishment for election night antics.
Buffalo Grove trustees will decide tonight (Nov. 15) whether to reprimand Village President Elliott Hartstein for his election night parody of recalled Trustee Lisa Stone. A proposed resolution admonishing Hartstein has been crafted around the village's 2009 Code of Conduct, which states, in part, that public officials' actions should: Hartstein, who arrived at an election night gathering of recall supporters wearing a jacket and patriotic tie, later donned a black shirt and long-haired wig and performed a parody of Stone. The performance was documented by the media, including Buffalo Grove Patch. The following morning Hartstein issued a public apology, in which he called his behavior "foolish" and said that he "lost sight of what was …

This whole Buffalo Grove spectacle only illustrates the poor leadership exhibited by Mr. Hartstein, but more importantly the inability of the board to function as a team and function effectively. The recall, Mr. Hartstein's behavior the other night, and the outbursts of frustration by the board at meetings, demonstrates a lack of leadership and loss of collective control. Quite frankly I am embarrassed to be associated with you and this town based on your actions and inaction. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Leaders must set the example, clearly no one stepped forward the other night except for after the fact to denounce Mr. Hartstein's actions. Letters after the fact are meaningless, action at the time is everything. Jeff what …

Ousted trustee says Hartstein, and most other trustees, should leave office.
Lisa Stone acknowledges that during the 18 months she served as trustee, she attacked Village President Elliott Hartstein for what she says are questionable leadership decisions. But, she emphasizes, she has never "denigrated" him as a person in the way she believes he did when he dressed in a black shirt and wig and delivered a parody of her speech and appearance in front of a crowd of recall supporters, who gathered Tuesday night to await election results. Images from the performance were captured by the media, including Buffalo Grove Patch. Photos and video from Patch were also aired Wednesday night on NBC's local news. "When I first saw it, honestly I felt a little insulted," Stone said. "I can't believe he could be so cruel. I've …

Over 9,000 citizens of Buffalo Grove came out to the polls to cast their vote on the recall of Lisa Stone. While I was one of the people seeking the recall of Ms. Stone, I feel obligated to speak out to Mr. Hartstein and the trustees. As a municipal employee for over 30 years with two different municipalities, one of the "commandments" they preached to all employees was that, as an employee, we were extensions of the Village and that, at all times, we should conduct ourselves as if we were representing the Village or City. If I were to get into an argument in public where I worked, it could be mentioned in a news article. If I were picked up DUI, it could be mentioned who I worked for. As a municipal employee or as an elected official of a…
