Student Arrives to School in Police Car

This is the kind of police encounter worthy of bragging.

Prairie School second-grader Noa David received a special ride to school April 25 — complete with flashing lights — with Buffalo Grove Police Sgt. Mike Rodriguez. She won the ride to school at a recent Bingo family event sponsored by the Prairie PTO.

Prairie Fourth-Grader Plays Tiny Tim in 'A Christmas Carol'

Roni Akurati performs in the Goodman Theatre's production of the play.

Lake Zurich resident Roni Akurati has arguably the most recognizable line in the Goodman Theatre's production of A Christmas Carol. He delivers this line at the end of the popular play: "God bless us, every one!" The fourth-grader at Prairie Elementary School in Buffalo Grove landed the role of Tiny Tim Cratchit after two auditions. He now acts in one to two performances of the play each day from Tuesday through Sunday. "When I knew I got picked, I was really happy," said Akurati. The son of Ramesh and Rajani, Akurati is no stranger to the stage — or screen. According to his Goodman Theatre profile, Akurati has performed in My Chicago: Stories from the City at the Gorilla Tango Theatre and Sleeping Beauty with SOPA Productions. He also …

Principal for the Day

Submitted by School District 96

Prairie School fifth-grader Rachel Becker won the opportunity to be Principal for the Day through a PTO-sponsored pizza/bingo event held on Feb. 25. She carried out her duties on April 8, accompanying Principal Christine Pfaff on classroom visits and attending meetings with staff. Being nervous made her giggle when making morning announcements, she confessed. Meanwhile, Ivy Hall Elementary School fourth-graders Brett and Blake Gitler were assistant principals for the day on April 5. They won the honor through a drawing at the Ivy Hall PTO-sponsored pizza/bingo event earlier in the school year. Accompanied by Principal Jennifer Brown, their responsibilities as assistant principals included leading Board of Education members on a building …

Fourth-Grader Organizes Toy Drive

Submitted by School District 96

Prairie Elementary School fourth-grader Isabella Przybylo, student of Jeanette Saltzberg, is a leader with heart. In making and delivering "care bears" to pediatric patients at Advocate Condell Medical Center, she recognized a need that she and her classmates could help meet. Isabella organized a week-long collection drive and her peers and their families contributed generously. The books, toys, and games collected were gratefully received by Advocate Condell staff member Tammy Stick, who assured the Prairie School fourth-graders, "You've really made a difference!"

Good Samaritans

Two volunteers cleared snow near Prairie School over the weekend.

Long Grove resident Dan deGrazia and his assistant Kyle deKruif spent their Sunday morning on Feb. 6 clearing sidewalks adjacent to District 96's Prairie School on Brandywyn Lane. The pair worked several hours to cut paths in the snow so that the elementary students and their parents would not have to walk in the street. deGrazia performed the same good deed for District 96 Prairie families in 1999.

Letters to the Editor

Fifth-Grader Fights for School Air Conditioning

Letter to the Editor

I wrote to the Board Members of District 96 about the problem that Prairie Elementary School does not have an air conditioned gym. The President, Marc Tepper, told me that it was not done in 2005 because it cost too much. So I responded that that was unacceptable. He never wrote me back. And to discourage me from writing to him he told me to "talk to my principal and teachers" if I had any questions. This is definitely a Board issue. He does not want to understand or does not care that during the year it can get very hot and that heat affects the gym. We do a lot of running in our gym classes. Sometimes I do not even want to go to P.E. class because I do not want to risk having a heat stroke. I am a very athletic person. I play soccer and…
