The following public service announcement was provided by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A champagne toast is a great way to welcome 2013, but be mindful as you uncork the bottle: warm bottles of champagne and improper cork-removal techniques cause serious, potentially blinding eye injuries every year. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that champagne bottles contain pressure as high as 90 pounds per square inch – more than the pressure found inside a typical car tire. This pressure can launch a champagne cork at 50 miles per hour as it leaves the bottle — fast enough to shatter glass. It's also fast enough to permanently damage vision. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up its DUI enforcement efforts for the holiday season. The department's 2012 Holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over/Click It or Ticket” program began Monday and runs through New Year's Eve. Officers will be cracking down on drunk drivers and seat belt law violators. Enforcement efforts will concentrate on the deadly nighttime hours between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. According to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the midnight to 3 a.m. timeframe is the deadliest time on Illinois roadways, and 9 p.m. is the time of day when data shows that alcohol involvement and low seat belt use begins to play a much more significant role in motor…
