Driver Crashes into Funeral Procession, Two Taken to Hospital

Traffic was rerouted Friday morning after a four-car accident at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 15 at the intersection of Lake-Cook and Buffalo Grove roads.

Two people were hospitalized and roads were shut down Friday morning (Feb. 15) after a driver collided with a funeral procession at the intersection of Lake-Cook and Buffalo Grove roads. A man driving a Honda CRV, heading north on Buffalo Grove Road, crashed into a Toyota Camry that was in the middle of a funeral procession headed west on Lake-Cook Road, Buffalo Grove Police Cpl. Tom Dattilo said.  “After those two collided, the CRV continued north and collided with two cards stopped in traffic, going southbound,” Dattilo said. A passenger in the Honda CRV and one of the drivers stopped on southbound Buffalo Grove Road were transported to Northwest Community Hospital, he said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, he said. …

Cost Estimates Rise for Weiland, Lake-Cook Projects

Proposed improvements to Weiland Road and Lake-Cook Road are still on the table as studies progress.

Improvements to Weiland and Lake-Cook roads will cost more than originally expected, an engineer told Buffalo Grove officials last week. In an update to Village Board members, Civiltech engineer Bob Andres said the Weiland Road expansion project is now estimated to cost $40 million, while Lake-Cook Road improvements are estimated at $54 million. Earlier estimates placed the costs at $32 million and $40 million, respectively. “Assuming this may be built within the next six to eight years, we’ve inflated the cost to cover any contingencies,” Andres said, noting that if construction began now, the estimates would likely be 15 to 20 percent less. The updated estimates also include a new lighting system for Weiland Road and temporary lighting …

The Village has already spent 1.2 million and expects to spend another 1.5, which is likely to rise as with any major project. With projected construction out at least a few years, the questions is how much would it have cost to just repave and shore up Weiland as it presently exists? I'll bet that 1.2 million would have gone a long way and certainly 2.7 million would. Will they need to do an …   more ›

New Expenses Arise for Weiland, Lake-Cook Studies

Buffalo Grove officials agreed to spend more money to help move the projects forward.

Buffalo Grove officials signed off Monday on $467,000 in unexpected engineering costs associated with the widening of Weiland/Prairie and Lake-Cook roads. But, they added, the village will ultimately pay only a fraction of that amount. About half of the expense will be used to complete a study of Lake-Cook Road between Hastings Lane and Raupp Boulevard. The $241,000 will be fully reimbursed by the Cook County Highway Department, officials said. The remaining $226,000 will be used to complete the first study phase of the Weiland/Prairie corridor from Lake-Cook Road to Route 22. Lake County will reimburse the village for about 83 percent of the cost, leaving Buffalo Grove’s portion at $38,421, Public Works Director Greg Boysen said. Studies …

Car Catches Fire, Roads Closed

Portions of Lake-Cook and McHenry roads were closed Sunday evening in Buffalo Grove following a car fire.

No one was injured Sunday evening when an SUV caught on fire at the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Route 83 in Buffalo Grove. Police and fire crews responded to the call at 5:42 p.m., when a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer began smoking in the middle of the intersection. "The family got out of it, no problem," Police Cpl. Vince Positano said. Westbound Lake-Cook Road was temporarily closed at McHenry, and northbound Buffalo Grove Road was closed just north of the Lou Malnati's entrance. Black smoke could be seen from The Grove shopping center, anchored by Jewel. Positano said an electrical problem possibly caused what developed into a full blaze. The vehicle "just started smoking inside" and within minutes "there were flames coming out all the …
