Indian Trails Public Library has been ordered to file amended reports pertaining to its 2011 referendum, following complaints raised by Rob Sherman.
A year-and-a-half-long dispute between Buffalo Grove resident Rob Sherman and Indian Trails Public Library may be nearing its end. Sherman filed a complaint in 2011 alleging that the library misused public funds to promote its referendum. After a series of hearings and revised complaints, the State Board of Elections (SBE) on Monday ordered the library to file amended reports within 30 days disclosing all receipts and expenditures pertaining to the referendum, which voters approved. Specifically, the order said, the library must detail payments to Holy Cow! Consulting and Donna Fletcher Consulting. "While the library district and its attorneys disagree with those findings and recommendations, we will comply with all of the State Board's …

The Harry Potter author's new book, "The Casual Vacancy," is scheduled to be released Sept. 27.
Harry Potter may have vanished into the past, but author J.K. Rowling is still around, with her for-adults book The Casual Vacancy due out Sept. 27. Buffalo Grove-area residents can find the book at Indian Trails and Vernon Area public libraries, but most will likely have to wait for a turn to check out a copy of the book. Indian Trails has ordered 19 copies of the book, which will be available at the main building as well as the branch in Prospect Heights, said Rob Kamm, collection management librarian. "While the hold list will tie up most of those copies for a couple of weeks, we have designated three copies for the Front Room Collection at the main library — those are the one-week/no-renewal books in the room just to the left of the …

Buffalo Grove High School senior Rocco Buttliere will display some of his intricate work at Indian Trails Public Library.
In the Buttliere family’s Buffalo Grove home, the Eiffel Tower shares a table with the World Trade Center complex, Toronto’s CN Tower, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. A row of shops sits on top of an entertainment center, with cotton balls representing snow artfully arranged on the rooftops. Each building is a 1:650 scale model assembled entirely out of LEGOs and designed and constructed by Rocco Buttliere, a Buffalo Grove High School senior. Buttliere first became interested in LEGOs when he was in first grade and selling popcorn for his Cub Scout troop. He earned enough points to win his first set, a Harry Potter-themed kit. Two years ago, he started designing and building models of skyscrapers, having been influenced by the work of Spencer …

After a delay of almost 18 months, the Indian Trails Public Library’s Reading Garden is finally being built.
Originally scheduled for completion in April 2010, the Reading Garden was planned as a fundraiser by the Foundation for the Indian Trails Public Library. Donors purchased bricks in a variety of sizes, and could inscribe the bricks with dedications to relatives or friends, or with an inspirational person. The stone garden comprises paved bricks and seat rocks and is situated outside, near the library’s main entrance. A crew started work on the garden last week, and bricks will soon be installed. “The garden was supposed to be a fundraiser for the Foundation,” Gene Looft, a member of the library foundation, said. “I think it’ll be more of a break-even project instead.” The Reading Garden was also designed to encourage people to sit and read …

Jennie Spallone, a Buffalo Grove resident who is an author and Realtor, will release her latest novel in October.
Jennie Spallone lives a life of crime. Crime writing, that is. A mystery writer, Spallone’s latest novel, Window of Guilt, will be available through Amazon.com at the end of October. Set in Lac La Belle, Wis., the novel focuses on the wife of an insurance adjuster who discovers a body outside her summer home. According to Spallone, the novel is about much more than just a body. “The main character’s husband feels guilt for what he’s had to do in his own job,” Spallone said. “He doesn’t tell his wife what’s going on, and their relationship erodes. The guilt over what’s happened tears away at their marriage.” Spallone also recently read Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar by Alan Morinis, and sees parallels between Morinis…
