WGN calls election for Schneider.
(Updated at 9:35 p.m.) Deerfield’s Brad Schneider thanked supporters and pledged a vigorous fight to win the 10th Congressional District seat as he claimed the Democratic nomination to oppose Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. “I knew we could do something special,” Schneider said, talking about his decision to run in May. “We did this with character integrity and class.” Schneider amassed 46.9 percent of the vote to defeat Ilya Sheyman, who had 38.6 percent, John Tree with 8.8 percent and Vivek Bavda with 5.7 percent. Sheyman, looking tired and disappointed, came down from his room at the Ramada in Waukegan at around 9 p.m. to concede the election and to thank his supports. "We came up a little short tonight…
Light turnout expected as Congressman and his four Democratic challengers focus on last minute campaigning.
Candidates for the 10th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) were greeting voters in today’s primary amid low turnout in a some areas. Dold, who is unopposed in the Republican primary, was talking to people at the Lake Forest train station this morning and attended a lunch in Chicago with Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The four Democrats seeking their party’s nomination to oppose Dold—Ilya Sheyman, Brad Schneider, Vivek Bavda and John Tree—were trying for the last minute votes as well. Though early voting turnout was much less than four years ago, Lake County Clerk Willard Helander has seen a steady stream of voters today. “There were some voters in line early this morning at 6 a.m…

Candidates become less contentious and focused on rallying their supporters.
Calm returned to the campaign for the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) as candidates scramble to rally their supporters for Tuesday’s primary. After two weeks of charges and counter charges, candidates were exhorting their supporters to make last minute phone calls and knock on their neighbors’ doors to secure the margin of victory in a race both Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider and Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman expect to be close. “This is how we’re going to win,” Sheyman said to a group of people Sunday in Glencoe who were canvassing for him. “Three doors knocked, six asks per phone call that’s 1 ½ voters per precinct,” he added …

Over the last several weeks, Tenth District congressional candidate Ilya Sheyman and groups backing him such as MoveOn.Org have been attacking rival Brad Schneider rather than promoting any positive ideas of their own. They are denouncing four (4) out of the over seventy (70) political contributions Brad has made since 2000. As if 90% percent of his contributions to Democrats is not sufficient to call Brad a Democrat. By whose measure? As Brad has repeated since he entered the race last summer, 90% of his contributions were to Democrats, and 100% of his contributions were in the context of a candidate's position supporting a strong U.S. - Israel relationship. Sheyman and his backers have cynically tried to distort Schneider's support of …

Negative campaigning by groups supporting Ilya Sheyman motivated her decision.
State Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park) has decided to vote for Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider in Tuesday’s primary for the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). May made her decision today after groups supporting the candidacy of Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman like MoveOn have flooded the northern suburbs with advertising and telephone calls for over week criticizing Schneider for some donations made to Republicans. Sheyman worked for MoveOn before leaving his position to run for Congress. “Ilya’s negative advertising is full of overt distortions,” May said referring to the Presidential primary. “I’ve decided to vote for Brad Schneider. …

Washington analyst thinks Schneider will fare better against Dold.
A new poll released today prepared by Public Policy Polling for a group supporting Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman in Tuesday’s Democratic Congressional primary shows Sheyman with an 18-point lead over Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider. After reviewing the poll results, an editor from the independent Cook Political Report which analyzes House and Senate races, sees Schneider with a slightly better chance to win the Nov. 6 general election against Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). Earlier: Sen. Link Blasts Sheyman Tactics The poll of 629 likely Democratic voters with a margin of error of 3.9 percent shows 45 percent prefer Sheyman while 27 percent like Schneider. Long Grove business owner John Tree has 7 percent …
Lake County Democratic chairman complains about negative campaigning.
State Sen. Terry Link (D-Waukegan), the Lake County Democratic Chairman, publically criticized campaign tactics ahead of Tuesday’s 10th District Congressional District primary contest for the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the fall. Earlier Wednesday, Link specifically accused one of candidates, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, of a strategy the Lake County party leader fears could lead to a Dold victory in November. Groups supporting Sheyman like MoveOn and True Majority PAC have been flooding the area with telephone calls and advertising attacking one of Sheyman’s opponents, Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, for making some donations to Republicans. Patch first reported on this in May. …

Race gains national attention.
Continuing attacks between Democratic opponents is ratcheting up the intensity for Tuesday’s primary contest to earn the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. In the midst of the bickering, the race drew national attention as a column Tuesday by Stuart Rothenberg in Roll Call claimed Republicans believe a candidacy by Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman is Dold’s best bet to hold the seat. Most of the attention is about donations Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider made to Republicans in the last 12 years. The claims are being pushed by phone calls and advertising from MoveOn and other organizations backing Sheyman committed to helping a progressive gain the nomination. …

Howard Dean adds zip to Sheyman event.
With a week to go before the March 20 primary, Ilya Sheyman and Brad Schneider rallied their supporters Monday to make a final push to help them become the Democratic nominee to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. Sheyman got his crowd of more than 250 people at the United Auto Workers Hall in Lincolnshire to a fever pitch with chants of “Sheyman, Sheyman, Sheyman” with the help of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. Schneider thanked a more muted crowd of more than 100 volunteers and supporters at Michael’s Restaurant in Highland Park for their support, and asked them to keep making calls and knocking on doors to help him gain the nomination. The two other candidates seeking the Democratic nod are Long…

Sheyman outraises all candidates for the 10th District Congressional seat including Dold.
While Democrat Ilya Sheyman has raised more money the first two months of the year than any candidate for the 10th Congressional District seat including incumbent Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth), he has received criticism from one of his March 20 primary opponents. Sheyman, a community organizer from Waukegan, collected $237,044.43 between Jan. 1 and Feb. 29, according to the report he filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) Thursday while Dold raised $205,058 for the same period. The campaign of Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, who brought in $131,571.61 for the two months, according to the FEC report, has criticized Sheyman for the lack of money raised from citizens of the District. “More than half of Schneider'…

and to answer your question, I would have Campaign finance laws changed back so that Corporations are not classified as "people" and can't contribute to political campaigns for one. Then a review of this protracted election cycle with delegates and all the hurdles and loop holes for candidates to wastes millions of dollars on for years trying to get into or keep their office - that is a travesty …   more ›
