BG Fire Department Offers Fire Prevention Tips for the Holidays

Is your Christmas tree a fire hazard? Are you lighting candles or stringing lights? Read these tips to keep your home safe this season.

The “Keep the Wreath Red” Program is a visual reminder to citizens to take additional safety precautions during the holiday season to make this a safe and happy holiday season. As the holiday season begins, each fire station in Buffalo Grove places in public view a holiday wreath decorated with red bulbs. The wreaths are illuminated constantly. If a fire is directly caused by holiday decorations, one red bulb will be changed to a white bulb. By following these tips you can help “Keep the Wreath Red.” Christmas Trees Consider an artificial tree; they are much safer and cleaner. Select only fresh trees that are deep green in color, have a strong scent of pine and do not lose their needles readily. Do not rely on chemical sprays to make your …

Recycle Old Holiday Lights in Buffalo Grove

Light strands can be dropped off at two locations in the village.

The Village of Buffalo Grove is again participating in The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County's holiday light recycling program.  Broken or unwanted strings of holiday lights and extension cords can be brought to the Buffalo Grove Police Department or Village Hall through Feb. 28. Elgin Recycling will process the material. Lights and extension cords can be dropped off at Village Hall weekdays between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or at the Buffalo Grove Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Holiday Light Display Awaits Fixed Connection

Crews expected to fix 'improper' hookup before Wednesday deadline.

Workers from Commonwealth Edison and the village of Buffalo Grove are working to repair an “improper” connection along Lake-Cook Road, which had threatened to reduce the size of the village’s annual holiday light display. The display usually includes trees on the village campus at Raupp Boulevard and Lake-Cook Road and parkway trees east and west of the intersection. But village officials last week informed the power company that an electrical connection that supplies power to the parkway was “improper” and unsafe, ComEd spokeswoman Alana Johnson said. “Upon investigation, we determined that the connection was not made by ComEd, it is indeed improper and poses a safety concern,” she said. Recycle Unwanted Holiday Lights

Lights can be recycled at Village Hall and the police department.

The Village of Buffalo Grove is holding a holiday light recycling program now through Feb. 2. Holiday string lighting and extension cords can be dropped off at Village Hall between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mondays and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or at the Buffalo Grove Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
