Animal Clinic's Pet Food Drive a Success

Buffalo Grove's Veterinary Specialty Center collected more than 1,200 pounds of pet food and supplies during a two-month effort.

In an effort to make sure that our furry friends were not forgotten this holiday season, Veterinary Specialty Center and its clients donated more than 1,200 pounds of pet food and necessities, as well as more than $2,500 to Nina’s Pet Food Pantry. The donations were collected at VSC between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. “When people are going through tough financial times, pets are often left behind or neglected. By supporting Nina’s Pet Food Pantry, VSC wanted to show that there is hope. Nina’s Pet Food Pantry is a great way to keep pets with their families and in good homes,” VSC’s client service administrator, Lisa Sadak, said in a statement.  Nina’s Pet Food Pantry operates out of established food pantries at St. Vincent de Sales Parish in Lake …

True Story: I Buy Gifts That I’d Like To Receive

When it comes to buying gifts for my children, I tend to stick with the toys I like.

Now that the holidays are well behind us, let me make a confession: I occasionally pick out gifts for my kids that I would like to receive. Let me back up and say that yes, of course I purchase gifts with Gracie’s and Liam’s interests in mind. Well, usually. For Christmas, both children received books. Gracie received much-wanted and asked-for movies and craft supplies last Christmas, and Liam received tool sets and things that go “vroom” because that’s what makes him smile. But I also picked out a LEGO set for Gracie that was actually for me. It was a bit complex for her age, and I did it because I thought it looked cool and would be fun for me to assemble over a few hours one afternoon. It’s a nice departure from the more age-appropriate…

Drinking? Find a Designated Driver First

Plan ahead and be safe as you celebrate.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council remind everyone that the best way to stay safe is to plan ahead and designate a sober before you head out for your festivities. Check out this Facebook tab with 50 non-alcoholic party drink recipes. Alternative Ride Locator — Here's a list of nationwide alternative ride programs. Are You a Gift Whisperer?

If there’s any one talent I’d love to have, it’s my mother’s knack of picking the right gift.

Call it intuition, a sixth sense, or just incredible good luck, but my mother is what you might call a “gift whisperer.” She has an uncanny ability to find just the right gift for a recipient, and it's almost always something the recipient loves, but didn’t even know they wanted. Case in point: About 12 years ago, my mother converted piles of our old family movies from reels to VHS tapes, and gave copies to my father, sister and me. It had honestly never occurred to me to want a copy of our home videos, but as soon as I saw the gift, I knew it was probably one of the best present I’ve ever received. It was a clear-cut home run, and I could tell my mother was just as excited to give the tapes as we were to receive them. Looking back, I have…

About Town

Return of the Ugly Sweater

Ugly Christmas sweaters have gone viral this year!

Along with the lights, the carols, the decorations and the gifts, there is one item that no Christmas is without; it’s the ever-present Christmas sweater.  Whether it’s a bank teller, a Dominick’s cashier, a teacher or a friend, there is always someone that religiously dons his or her Christmas garb. Last year I wrote about a woman who wore a different Christmas outfit for every day in December, but this year it’s a little different. This year the Christmas sweater has gone viral and the uglier the sweater, the better.  Ugly Christmas Sweater is the new party theme and Good Morning America recently had a segment on the return of the Christmas sweater. Stevenson High School has had an Ugly Sweater Day on the last day of school before winter…
