Vernon Hills may soon be home to a Dave & Buster's restaurant/arcade. Dave & Buster's representatives approached the village board with a concept presentation during the committee-of-the-whole meeting Dec. 18. The restaurant/arcade would be constructed at Westfield Hawthorn Mall on both levels between Sears and Carson Pirie Scott. The 40,000-square-foot facility would have two entrances on the lower level: one inside the mall and the other outside, to permit it to be open past mall hours. Hide Kashima, development director for Westfield, said Dave & Buster's would occupy a number of upper-level spaces, including Glow Golf and the former Build-a-Bear site. Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg isn’t wasting a minute of shopping time on Black Friday. Doors will open at midnight and all stores will be open, spokeswoman Carol Vesely said. In addition to Black Friday sales at the individual stores, the mall is offering a couple of extra holiday promotions. The first 250 pajama-clad adults who enter through Door 1 at midnight will receive a $20 Woodfield Mall American Express gift card as well as a Santa hat. Door 1 is located on the lower level of the JCPenney wing, near Subway and Santa’s Treasure Chest. Early morning shoppers can also qualify for a free shopping tote. Several local police departments were represented at the event this weekend at Westfield Hawthorn Mall, hosted by the Vernon Hills Police Department.
It's not too often that 8-year-old Siddhu Gurumurthi is happy about a trip to the mall. "He's a boy — he doesn't like shopping," said his mom, Gayathri. But on Sunday, the Buffalo Grove residents got to experience the 8th Annual Law Enforcement Exhibition at the Westfield Hawthorn Mall. The event was hosted by the Vernon Hills Police Department. "This is the first time he's actually excited about coming to the mall," said Gayathri as she watched her son ride around on a small, four-wheeled bicycle at the Des Plaines Police Department booth. The Westfield Hawthorn Mall is headed for an expansion and remodeling project that would include a 12-screen movie theater, restaurants and upgraded mall entrances. Westfield representatives presented their plan at a joint meeting of the Vernon Hills Village Board and the Planning and Zoning Board July 17, with time spent discussing architectural materials and signage. Vernon Hills Trustees will hold a combined village board and committee-of-the-whole meeting July 17 to see a concept presentation regarding Westfield Hawthorn's expansion and renovation plans. Assistant Village Manager John Kalmar said the presentation will largely focus on signage and architectural design, including building materials and colors. He said the board will not be asked to make decisions at the meeting but instead to just give guidance on the project. Westfield wants to construct a 12-screen, 1,600-seat movie theater on the north side of the mall between JC Penney and Sears, according to committee-of-the-whole meeting minutes from April 17. I currently work at Glow Golf in Hawthorne Mall and we have been open and doing very well on business for 3 and a half years where we also hold birthday parties. I am an assistant manager there and would find it very unfair to lose my job because of this place. There's enough people within this economy losing jobs and I do not want to lose mine due to this situation. more ›
