Sen. Manchin, Kirk family see signs of improvement.

Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) best friend in the U.S. Senate thinks it is time for Illinois’s junior senator to get back to work at least on a part-time basis, according to a statement released by Kirk’s office. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) paid Kirk a visit Saturday, giving him not only cards and good tidings from his colleagues, but work to do. “I brought him some work to get done, some proposals to look at and some of the political magazines that have all the news in Washington,” Manchin said. “I brought all the love and best wishes of the Senate to Mark and his family, including cards with good wishes from his colleagues.” Manchin spent Saturday morning with Kirk and his family at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and gave his own …

to state anything other then concern or best wishes for Kirk under the circumstances is classless beyond comprehension...I'm not a big Kirk fan from the political point of view but I sincerely wish him as healthy and speedy recovery as possible....and to karl, I think you need to examine your post with more attention to the real problems facing our nation these days--and that being "hate" is a …   more ›

Further surgery on Sen. Schakowsky, Dold Differ on State of the Union

Local members of Congress like ideas on education but differ on other issues.

Local members of Congress who sit on opposite sides of the political aisle found areas of agreement in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday, but their initial reaction was very different. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) heard a strong vision for the country from the President, while Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) thought Obama was offering campaign themes in his speech. “It was more of a political speech than a State of the Union,” Dold said. Schakowsky, who has been a strong supporter of the President since he first ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004, heard a leader with a plan for progress who will act by executive order if necessary. “The President laid out a vision for real progress for working with the …

I made the mistake of trying to refute Mr. Hall's statement that religion has killed more people than any other cause. I gave a link to a source that began with the following caveat "On these pages, I have collected a variety of body counts for all the major atrocities of the 20th Century and set them out for you to examine. I have tried to keep commentary to a minimum, although I would have to …   more ›
