The Tollway Board just received the recommendations from their Blue Ribbon committee urging the extension of Route 53. If you agree with me that the Route 53 extension to the north and linkage to the tri-state tollway thru expanded 120 is a critical link to the regions road system, I would urge you to contact the tollway board to urge them to expeditiously implement the recommendation. Our northern region should not be second fiddle to those other areas to the south that already have seen the 355 extension become a reality. To have a major road abruptly come to an end at Lake Cook Road as Route 53 currently does defies logic and the needed extension is a major missing piece of the system. The Blue Ribbon committee supported 53 extension as…

Negative campaigning is sadly being injected into the Democratic Congressional race. Some opponents and their supporters have tried to wrongfully question Brad Schneider’s Democratic pedigree based on campaign contributions. Do not be distracted by this negative assertion. Brad has always been a strong supporter of Israel, and like many Democrats in our District, made some contributions to some supportive people on the other side of the aisle. I know Brad’s commitment to the democratic core issues is steadfast and the overwhelming majority of his support has been for Democratic candidates to insure that Congress includes strong Democratic candidates in our area and neighboring states. I suspect those who are spreading this negativism hopes…

It has been frustrating observing our polarized Congress and seeing too many members take extreme positions and being unwilling to work together to find real solutions to issues. That makes it critical for all of us to find the best possible Candidates to go to Washington to represent us. That is why I have personally taken the time to sit down with the Democratic candidates in the tenth congressional district to hear their views and positions and their approach to dealing with issues, gone to forums to hear how they handle themselves, reviewed their web pages, scrutinized their answers to candidate questionnaires, and looked at their literature and closely watched the evolution of their campaigns. Though the field is an impressive group …

Buffalo Grove's village president stepped down Monday after 12 years at the helm.
Buffalo Grove welcomed its newest elected officials Monday night, but most of the Village Board’s 90-minute meeting was spent delivering accolades to outgoing public servants. State representatives Sidney Mathias (R-53) and Carol Sente (D-59), Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman and trustees showered praise on Elliott Hartstein, who after 12 years as village president turned the reins over to Jeff Braiman, and on DeAnn Glover, who is retiring after 16 years as a trustee. Mathias and Sente read resolutions acknowledging both officials’ leadership, while trustees approved their own resolutions honoring Hartstein and Glover. Meanwhile, Stolman declared May 2 as “Elliott Hartstein Day” in Lake County. Hartstein and Glover received buffalo…

Buffalo Grove will say goodbye next week to three longtime public servants.
The Village of Buffalo Grove recognized three retiring firefighters Monday who have a combined total of nearly 100 years of professional experience. Deputy Chief Daniel Pearson, Battalion Chief Gary Belfield and Public Education Officer Arthur “Skip” Hart were lauded by Fire Chief Terry Vavra for their dedication to the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. (See video.) “These are three absolutely phenomenal firefighters, but more importantly, three phenomenal human beings that this village is going to lose,” Vavra said. “They leave behind so much of what this department now is.” The three received a standing ovation from those in attendance, and were also praised by the Village Board. Pearson and Belfield were among the first full-time …

Village President Elliott Hartstein asks for specifics, calls for harmony during Town Hall meeting with Rep. Robert Dold.
Anger and frustration emanated from some members of a crowd of more than 40 citizens who came to a Town Hall meeting to hear Rep. Robert Dold (R-10th) speak Saturday at the Buffalo Grove Village Hall. While some contentedly listened to an explanation of the House of Representatives' efforts the last two weeks to reduce the nation’s financial deficit, others expressed their displeasure of the perceived privilege the wealthiest Americans receive from the Internal Revenue Code. Eleanore and Bob Rathke of Buffalo Grove are concerned with America’s growing budget deficit. They came to hear what Dold was going to do about the proposal passed Friday by the House of Representatives, 235-193. Dold voted for it. “What [Rep. Paul] Ryan (R-Wis.) did …

It's our great schools like Stevenson HS that make our community and our neigboring communities great places to raise our kids. We can't afford to tamper with long standing success. Join me in supporting Merv Roberts, Terry Moons, Bruce Lubin and David Weisberg to insure that SHS remains the high caliber educational institution that has been recognized time and again as one of the best in the nation. As a former Stevenson Board member and as a Mayor, I have worked with them and know these dedicated leaders are a team committed to success for every student. Elliott Hartstein Buffalo Grove

Buffalo Grove village president announced Nov. 28 that he will not run for re-election in April.
In what he described as a "very personal and important decision," Buffalo Grove Village President Elliott Hartstein announced Sunday that he will not seek a fourth term in the April election. In a statement he issued to the media Nov. 28, Hartstein said that while he will remain involved with local, regional and state issues, it's "time to turn the page to a new chapter" in his life. "One does not have to be in an elected position to be involved," he said. "In fact, one can focus their efforts on issues and projects that they really care about strongly without the responsibility to deal with a broader range of issues." Hartstein has served in local goverment for three decades. In addition to being Buffalo Grove's village president for 12 …

Current President Elliott Hartstein has not yet decided if he will pursue another term. Meanwhile, trustee and clerk candidates begin to line up.
Longtime Buffalo Grove Trustee Jeff Braiman will seek a promotion in 2011, when he pursues election as village president. Meanwhile, current Village President Elliott Hartstein said he has yet to decide if he will seek another term in the April election. Braiman, who has served as trustee since 1991, said he has considered running for the village's top post in the past. The past 18 months of contention between Village President Elliott Hartstein and recalled Trustee Lisa Stone, which culminated with Hartstein's election night parody of Stone, were the factors that prompted him to declare his candidacy in the village's next election, he said. "Before April of last year, I think Buffalo Grove and the board was respected in the village and …

Trustees will decide tonight if Village President Elliott Hartstein deserves admonishment for election night antics.
Buffalo Grove trustees will decide tonight (Nov. 15) whether to reprimand Village President Elliott Hartstein for his election night parody of recalled Trustee Lisa Stone. A proposed resolution admonishing Hartstein has been crafted around the village's 2009 Code of Conduct, which states, in part, that public officials' actions should: Hartstein, who arrived at an election night gathering of recall supporters wearing a jacket and patriotic tie, later donned a black shirt and long-haired wig and performed a parody of Stone. The performance was documented by the media, including Buffalo Grove Patch. The following morning Hartstein issued a public apology, in which he called his behavior "foolish" and said that he "lost sight of what was …

Negative ads: I hated to see my candidate, Ilya Sheyman, taking this route. But I believe he HAD to do so. Why? Because a very different type of ad that the Schneider people were resorting to: The make-a-batch-of-Wyler’s-and-call-it-“fresh-squeezed lemonade” route. In almost every single one of the dozen or so fliers they sent me (and presumably every other Dem-leaning household in the 10th …   more ›
