Ghim Claims Cup At State Junior Amateur Golf Championship

Buffalo Grove teen bested a field of 156 to earn the Illinois Junior Golf Association’s highest prize.

After shooting a course record 65 Wednesday at the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, Doug Ghim of Buffalo Grove said it wouldn’t mean much if he didn’t bring home a trophy. “Now it means something,” Ghim said with a smile Thursday after besting 155 of the state’s best junior players to win the Slovitt Cup, the Illinois Junior Golf Association’s top prize. The title didn’t come easy for the 15-year-old. He started the final round tied for first place with Ian Mankoff of Lake Forest and one stroke ahead of Brian Bullington of Frankfort. Doug Ghim won’t even graduate from high school for another three years, but the Buffalo Grove teenager already has an impressive list of golfing achievements. Ghim, 15, was the 2009 Illinois Junior Golf Association Player of the Year. Last fall, he finished third in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A State Tournament, just one stroke behind Thomas O’Bryan of Waubonsie Valley. Wednesday, Ghim added another milestone, shooting a 65 in the second round of the Illinois Junior Amateur Championship at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, equaling the course record.
