Stevenson School Board Winners, Supporters Celebrate Success

The United 4 Stevenson slate members praised and thanked the community Tuesday night following their victory at the polls.

After a heated campaign, the incumbent slate triumphed in the Stevenson School Board election. Terry Moons, Bruce Lubin, Merv Roberts and David Weisberg each prevailed by about a two-thirds margin over challengers Kathy Powell, Kim Brady and Charles Cardella. With all 55 Lake County precincts tallied, Weisberg led the way with 4,818 votes. He was followed by Moons (4,626), Lubin (4,611), Roberts (4,500), Brady (2,595), Powell (2,573) and Cardella (2,309). Dozens of supporters of the winning candidates, who campaigned together under the name "United 4 Stevenson," gathered at Long Grove Café Tuesday night to track election results while celebrating with food and drink. “We did this (campaign) with a passion,” Moons told supporters after the …

I think creationism or intelligent design is more suited to a college philosophy or world religion class. There young people can hear both sides of the argument and make their own decisions.   more ›

'Shaking Up' SHS Challengers' Claims

Letter to the Editor

Many think the current Stevenson High School board has been around for too long and needs shaking up. But what needs “shaking up”? Is it our record high ACT scores? Our impressive AP enrollment? The hundreds of clubs we offer our students? The amazing teachers? What actually needs “shaking up” are two claims the opponents are making. First, they claim Stevenson is slipping in its academic ranking. They refer to data taken from an annual US News & World report. What they don’t tell us is the author of the report admits that a school’s decline in such a ranking has no correlation with excellence because the ranking does not take into account how students perform on the AP tests; it only takes into account how many students take AP tests? So…

Hi Art, I have been thinking more about your questions. One thing that the challengers have been focusing on is the decrease in enrollment in Stevenson. I think they have been quite misleading in that the enrollment has just begin to decrease this year. Prior to this year we have seen four years of very minimal decrease and one year with a decrease in 100 students. The real enrollment decline was…   more ›

Don't 'Mess With' District 125's Success

Letter to the Editor

After attending the Forum at Stevenson High School on Tuesday and listening to all the candidates for District 125 speak and respond to questions, I will be voting for all of the candidates in the United 4 Stevenson slate – Moons, Lubin, Roberts and Weisberg. While I was initially impressed with each of the candidates and their desire to serve on the Stevenson school board, as time went on, I was left with few answers about the issues of the three challengers and even less information on what they proposed to do about them. Powell, Brady and Cardella asserted that the incumbents have not been financially responsible and promised, if elected, to bring our taxes down and cut spending in “non-critical” areas. But not one of them provided a …

Open Letter to '125 for 125' Candidates

Letter to the Editor

Some direct questions to the 125 for 125 Stevenson school board candidates: I am the proud mother of a senior at Stevenson High School. My son has enjoyed an academically elite education, outstanding social opportunities in the form of clubs and sports, and a high school experience that surpasses most in this country. During his college search we found that every college we visited not only knew of Stevenson high school but looked forward to Stevenson graduates applying to their colleges because these graduates are so prepared emotionally and academically for the college experience. On April 5th we all have the opportunity to vote for four members to fill open school board positions at Stevenson. This election is of great importance to so …

The silence on these issues from Charles Cardella, Kathy Powell, or Kim Brady is deafening. I guess their "We would like to improve communication with constituents " platform was just a lot of talk. This is what we'll get if any of these three get on the board. It seems like all their supporters (or sock puppet accounts) have abandoned these forums.   more ›

SHS Candidates Discuss Finances, 'Controversial' Topics

All seven candidates for the District 125 School Board fielded questions at a candidates forum Tuesday night.

The seven candidates for Stevenson High School’s School Board gathered Tuesday night to share their views on questions posed by the school’s Political Action Club. While the students described the event as “a classroom experience,” the forum drew hundreds of residents who nearly filled the school’s recital hall. The students didn’t shy away from the topics that have sparked passionate debate among residents in recent weeks. They posed questions about whether the high school should restrict “controversial material” in the curriculum (see second video) and whether creationism should be taught in the classroom. INTELLIGENT DESIGN “I do not believe intelligent design should be taught in any public high school,” said Kathy Powell who, along …

Yes, Kristin, it has been very quiet with none of the usual suspects posting anything. Having said that, we can't get complacent however since Cardella is an experienced political operative. I suspect that they aren't done yet.   more ›

'Restore Fiscal Responsibility' in District 125

Letter to the Editor

The Stevenson High School Board is amassing a pot of gold at your expense and I’m thrilled that for the first time in 18 years, three candidates are challenging these fat-cat school board members.  For at least the past 10 years, the board has raised taxes the MAXIMUM amount allowed by law and stockpiled a surplus of $72 million. Yet, the board deceptively claims its “Holding The Line On Taxes.” What few residents realize is that the board has honed a trick that hides its tax hikes from taxpayers. Here’s how they do it … after the board hikes the tax, it delays (or abates) all or a portion of the hike for only one year then taxes increase by that amount the following year PLUS  they increase taxes the maximum allowed for that year. I have …

Mr. Hintz got a promotion from a teaching to an admin position, which should - and did - result ina substantial pay raise. I agree 100% with you that the degree of this sounds excessive. But Mr. Hintz retired about 5 yeara ago, and this one example is being emailed thoughouth the community by the V125 folks (I'm not a supporter and I've gotten the email). Election Filing Ends — Meet the Candidates

Buffalo Grove will see contested races for two-year trustee term and village clerk.

The next four years of Buffalo Grove's leadership began to take shape today (Dec. 20), when the weeklong candidate filing period came to an end at 5 p.m. Current Trustee Jeffrey Braiman will run unopposed for village president, while incumbent trustees Steven Trilling and Jeffrey Berman will be joined by Mike Terson in uncontested races for three four-year trustee terms. The race heats up with two residents seeking election to the two-year trustee position caused by November's recall of Lisa Stone. Andrew Stein and Denice Bocek will compete to finish the second half of the term, which until April is being filled by appointee Eric Smith. Stein is a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, while Bocek serves on the Plan Commission. Meanwhile, …

Comparing our village government to the state legislature is like comparing a snow shovel to a snow plow. They are similar in that they both move snow, but in reality are very different. The biggest difference as to why people don't just run for state office (like they can at the local level) is the amount of money needed to run a decent campaign. The other major difference is the time commitment…   more ›

Village, Schools Discuss Snow Plans

Village officials say they are prepared to tackle icy roads, while schools share snow day policies.

Kurt Zimmermann, co-owner of Zimmermann True Value Hardware, is ready for winter. His store carries salt, shovels, snow blowers, windshield wiper solvents, blades and ice scrapers. "My most common question from customers is 'What's safe for my walkway?'" To assist customers, Zimmermann displays print-out sheets that detail the different types of salt and snow removers. The sheets explain the features of each product, including price and effectiveness in melting snow and ice. With a fleet of 24 plows, Rick Kuhl feels that the Village of Buffalo Grove is "ready for every snow event." Kuhl, the deputy director of public works, said that the village can order up to 5,000 tons of salt. Each vehicle can carry up to nine tons, and the village …
