Buffalo Grove Resident Launches Oklahoma Tornado Relief Effort

Maureen Welborn is collecting donations from anyone who wants to assist the tornado victims.

When disaster strikes, Maureen Welborn instinctively wants to help. Though she lives hundreds of miles away, the Buffalo Grove resident converted part of her home into a temporary warehouse as she collected relief items for the victims of the Joplin tornadoes in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. When she learned of the tornadoes that devastated Oklahoma communities this week, she again sprang into action. She and her daughter, Kara Welborn, have designated their home as a community drop-off location for donations to benefit the tornado victims. They are accepting items that will provide immediate aid to the tornado victims. Specific items they are collecting include bottled water, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby food and formula, pet food…

Officer Harris Awarded for Tornado Relief Efforts

Buffalo Grove Police Officer Jim Harris received the department's first quarter 2012 Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award.

A Buffalo Grove police officer was honored Sept. 10 for leading a relief effort to benefit tornado victims in Kentucky earlier this year. Officer Jim Harris was given a plaque after Village Manager Dane Bragg spoke of his efforts to provide assistance to residents of West Liberty, Ky., following the March 2 tornado. (See video at right.) Harris was nominated to receive the Buffalo Grove Police Department’s Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award by Deputy Chief Steve Husak, Cmdr.
