Fat Tuesday Means Paczkis Are Available

Where are you going for your paczki today?

Buffalo Grove residents in search of a packzi fix don't have far to look. Deerfields Bakery is marking Paczki Day with 16 flavors of the popular pastry. Paczkis, to some, are a last hurrah of sorts on Fat Tuesday (also called Mardi Gras or Paczki Day), which falls the day before the start of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting for Catholics. However, sweets fans of all creeds can enjoy these pastries. At Deerfields Bakery, paczkis come filled with custard, an assortment of fruits and even cookies 'n cream, among others.  Packzis are also be available from Spunky Dunkers, the Arlington Heights donut shop located across the street from Buffalo Grove High School.  How are you marking Fat Tuesday? Plan Ahead for Paczki Day in Buffalo Grove

Deerfields Bakery will offer 16 flavors of the traditional Mardi Gras treat. Paczkis will also be sold at nearby Spunky Dunkers.

Update: Deerfields Bakery Issues Recount in Obama-Romney Race

After accurately predicting 2004 and 2008 Presidential races, the cookie count is too close to call.

(Update at 6:40 p.m.) When Deerfields Bakery closed for the day at 5 p.m. today the number of cookies sold with the likenesses of President Barack Obama and Republican Challenger Mitt Romney was so close the Deerfield institution has issued a recount. “It was so close we’ve issued a recount,” Jacki Schmitt, one of the company’s owners, said. “You’ll have to check our website tomorrow.” One difference between the cookie election and the actual contest is voting more than once is allowed. “We encourage it,” Schmitt said. (Earlier at 2:34) Election day brought out a variety of opinions in Deerfield as people cast their ballots for President, Congress, the Illinois General Assembly and county races. Happy Paczki Day!

How are you celebrating Mardi Gras?

Are you breaking out the beaded necklaces or indulging in sweets today? While Buffalo Grove might not be able to compete with the celebrations in New Orleans, we know that won't stop many residents from marking Fat Tuesday, whether it's to get in one last hurrah before the Lenten season begins or simply grab the excuse to live it up. If past years are any indication, many will flock today to Deerfields Bakery for a paczki fix. According to the bakery's website, the pastries will come in 16 flavors today. Deerfields Bakery Receives Golden Bison Award

The Village of Buffalo Grove's award recognizes the bakery's community involvement.

Deerfields Bakery was honored Monday as a recipient of the village’s Golden Bison award. The award is presented to businesses that go above and beyond their daily operations. Deerfields, which opened in Buffalo Grove 18 years ago, was recognized for its generosity and civic involvement. The bakery has donated goods for events at schools, the village and the park district, has supported relief efforts following natural disasters and served the hungry through a recent partnership with Share Our Strength by donating a portion of “lemonaid” product sales to the No Kid Hungry program.
