Massive Food Drive Benefits Area Residents

Donations generated by an annual drive run by local volunteers and schools will benefit many this season.

Members of the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club, along with the Wheeling Rotary Club and area students, gathered Monday afternoon to assemble boxes of food that will be given to families in need. The boxes were packed with pasta, soup, canned fruits and vegetables and other non-perishables collected by the participants. Rotary members contributed some of the items, while others were donated by students at Cooper Middle School and Wheeling High School. The high school students added a community outreach component to the collection; they solicited donations from nearby residents last week and picked them up from homes over the weekend. The project has been annually for about 40 years, organizers said. "The need has grown bigger and the collections …

Community Comes Together to Help Struggling Families

Students from Cooper Middle School and Wheeling High School teamed up with the Buffalo Grove and Wheeling Rotary clubs for a holiday food drive.

Four hundred families will receive boxes of nonperishable food this weekend thanks to a food drive organized by students and Rotary members. Members of the Buffalo Grove and Wheeling Rotary clubs led the project in conjunction with Wheeling High School and Cooper Middle School. Wheeling’s Student Council ran an all-school food drive this month and collected donations from community members. Maritza Carvajal, Student Council secretary, said donations poured in as classes competed to amass the most items. Even more support came from Wheeling residents, who responded to fliers that students placed on their doors, asking that they contribute by leaving donations on their curbs on a designated pickup day. “The response was pretty good,” she …

Community Welcomes Cooper Students Back To School

Middle school teachers were joined by volunteers from across Buffalo Grove in creating artistic messages on the school's front walk.

Cooper Middle School continued its back-to-school tradition Monday, when about 100 people gathered to create signs and write messages for students in colored chalk. Elected officials, police officers, teachers, Village of Buffalo Grove staff members, District 21 School Board members and firefighters were among those who spent the sunny afternoon leaving warm greetings, some with artistic touches, on the school’s front walk. Among the most eye-catching displays was a chalk mural created by members of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, who created a remembrance of Sept. 11. “Hopefully, that will stir some conversation,” said Battalion Chief Shawn Collins, who sketched the image with the assistance of a few colleagues. Firefighters Work To Ensure Students 'Never Forget' Sept. 11

A sidewalk chalk mural created by members of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department aims to educate Cooper students.

Shawn Collins vividly recalls the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Like most adults, he can tell you what he was doing when he heard the news. And as a member of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, the impact of the terrorist attacks remains with him perhaps even more than an average citizen. He recalls talking with fellow firefighters who work in New York, as well as friends in the Chicago area who assisted with emergency response efforts. And he remembers driving to Colorado the following weekend to visit the memorial for fallen firefighters. “It was somber and reverent and reflecting all at the same time,” Collins said. Collins tapped into those emotions while outlining a chalk mural that he and his colleagues drew this week on the front steps …

This former NYer says thank you very much for caring so much and wanting to make a difference in the lives of these students by reminding them what our country and it's citizens endured during this time. It was the most horrific time in our country's recent history and it should never be forgotten because of all the lives that were impacted.
