Buffalo Grove Sgt. Scott Eisenmenger was named the department's Employee of the Year.
Buffalo Grove Sgt. Scott Eisenmenger was honored last week as the police department's 2012 Employee of the Year. Eisenmenger, who has served Buffalo Grove for 18 years, excels as the department's training coordinator, explained Bill Balling, who presented the award on behalf of the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club. The award includes a plaque, a $250 donation to the charity of Eisenmenger's choice and a $250 donation in his name to the Rotary International Foundation. Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steve Balinski also gave special commendations to Patrol Division Cmdr. Tom Reed and staff member Effie Harris, who also received a commendation in 2011.

Donations generated by an annual drive run by local volunteers and schools will benefit many this season.
Members of the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club, along with the Wheeling Rotary Club and area students, gathered Monday afternoon to assemble boxes of food that will be given to families in need. The boxes were packed with pasta, soup, canned fruits and vegetables and other non-perishables collected by the participants. Rotary members contributed some of the items, while others were donated by students at Cooper Middle School and Wheeling High School. The high school students added a community outreach component to the collection; they solicited donations from nearby residents last week and picked them up from homes over the weekend. Glenn Bird was recognized as Buffalo Grove’s Firefighter of the Year Monday when village officials publicly honored him for his efforts. He is the fifth recipient of the award, which is presented by the Buffalo Grove Fire Department and the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club. Each year, firefighters are invited to nominate colleagues for the award. Bird, the department’s assistant coordinator for emergency medical services and a preceptor who teaches new paramedics, was recognized for his work in training paramedics. “Glenn makes sure everybody understands what the right answer to the question is, and that’s not an easy thing to do with some of the (test) questions,” Fire Chief Terry Vavra said. “He helps a lot of students get through.” “To a …

The longtime community volunteer was presented with the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club's annual award.
Buffalo Grove resident Ellyn Ross was presented Monday with the Bill Reid Award, an honor bestowed annually by the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club to a longtime community contributor. Ross has served on the District 102 School Board since 2002 and volunteered with Stevenson High School’s community foundation since 2005. The award includes a $500 donation in Ross’ name to the Rotary International Foundation and a $500 donation to the charity of her choice. The award was named in memory of Reid, who was a longtime educator, Buffalo Grove trustee and Rotary member. The Buffalo Grove Rotary Club has announced the winners of its second annual duck race, held Monday in conjunction with Buffalo Grove Days. More than 2,000 ducks were purchased this year, but only three earned their buyers cash prizes. Winners were Mary Cain, who received $1,500 for first place; Bob Macht, whose second-place duck won him $500; and David Stolman, whose duck came in third, bringing him $250. A crowd of hungry Buffalo Grove residents turned out Thursday night for the Buffalo Grove Grove Rotary Club’s Taste of Buffalo Grove. The event, held at Buffalo Grove High School, featured $2 samples from a number of restaurants including Buffalo Restaurant, Fuji Thai, Grande Jakes, Grillworks, India House, Las Palmas, Oishii Thai, Prairie House, The Continental and Winberie's. Proceeds will benefit existing Rotary programs as well as those that will be implemented next year, President-elect Stephen Legge said. “We have a lot of continuous programs.
