The U.S. Postal Service's rates will increase beginning Jan. 27.
If you’re one of those people who believes that every penny counts, you have just over a week to head to the Buffalo Grove Post Office — or any other post office — to stock up on postage stamps before the new price goes into effect. Beginning Jan. 27, a First-Class stamp will cost 46 cents, a 1-cent increase from the current rate for a 1-ounce letter. Postcard stamps will also cost a penny more at 33 cents. By stocking up on “Forever” stamps now, patrons can save $1 for every 100 stamps they purchase before the new rate begins. As the name implies, the stamps can be used forever — even after rates increase. New this year is a First-Class Global Forever stamp, which allows you to mail a letter anywhere in the world for a flat rate of $1.10…

Are you ready for the holidays? Need some help mailing or shipping your holiday packages? Don’t have time to stand in line? Then come by the Buffalo Grove Post Office, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 18. Postal representatives will demonstrate how easy it is to mail or ship letters and packages by the Automated Postal Center (APC) located in the lobby. “We know this is a busy time of year for our customers,” said Buffalo Grove Postmaster Adele Villalobos. “That’s why we’re here to help make their holiday mailing and shipping easy.” Using the APC is like using an ATM. Monday, Nov. 12 is a federal holiday, but many local services will remain open.
The Buffalo Grove Post Office will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day, but most other local services will be offered that day. Schools serving Buffalo Grove students will be in session. The Buffalo Grove Village Hall and Indian Trails and Vernon Area public libraries will also be open. Leave non-perishable foods next to your mailbox on Saturday to help local food pantries.
As letter carrier John Thome loads his truck for the morning, he can’t help but think of the people he and other Postal Service employees will be helping this Saturday. “There’s definitely a need as far as the food shortage goes,” Thome said. Thome, who works for the Barrington Post Office, calls local pantries to notify them of the upcoming drive. “They’re always low. So many people are out of work. Any little thing we can do to help is worth its weight in gold," he said.
