Firefighters Grow Mustaches for a Cause

Members of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department participated in "Movember" last month. Here's a look at the mustaches they grew.

Buffalo Grove firefighters didn't just grow mustaches last month. Through their participation in the Movember initiative, they also raised nearly $1,200. This was the first year the department participated in Movember, an international effort to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues. The facial hair is intended to serve as a conversation starter about prostate and testicular cancer. Some of the participants shaved their mustaches off as soon as the month ended, while others have kept their new looks, said Fire Chief Terry Vavra. "A couple of the other guys, definitely not me, think they look good," Vavra said. As the holiday season begins, each fire station in Buffalo Grove places in public view a holiday wreath decorated with red bulbs. The wreaths are illuminated constantly. If a fire is directly caused by holiday decorations, one red bulb will be changed to a white bulb. By following these tips you can help “Keep the Wreath Red.” Christmas Trees Consider an artificial tree; they are much safer and cleaner. Select only fresh trees that are deep green in color, have a strong scent of pine and do not lose their needles readily. Do not rely on chemical sprays to make your …

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department is looking for the holders of two unclaimed tickets that were distributed in Halloween treat bags.

Buffalo Grove Firemen Grow Mustaches for Charity

Members of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department are participating in "Movember," an initiative that raises awareness and funds for men's health issues.

A number of Buffalo Grove firefighters will soon sport new mustaches as the department participates in Movember, an international effort to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues.  This is accomplished by growing mustaches during the month of November. The facial hair serves as a conversation starter, and participating Movember teams take the opportunity to discuss prostate and testicular cancer and raise funds for related initiatives. “It’s causing us to talk about something men generally don’t talk about,” Fire Chief Terry Vavra said. This is the first year that the Buffalo Grove Fire Department is joining the effort, Vavra said. The usually clean-shaven leader is among the Movember participants. “It’s kind of a fun thing for …

Firefighters will pass out trick-or-treat bags to 1,000 children on Halloween.

Members of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department will distribute Halloween goodie bags throughout the village's neighborhoods as children trick-or-treat from 2-7 p.m. Oct. 31. The department will pass out 1,000 bags. Five bags will contain a "Golden Ticket" redeemable for a ride to school on a fire truck.   Families are invited to stop and talk to the firefighters. They can also bring their cameras to have their pictures taken by a fire truck. "It also is a chance for the firefighters to have fun with the children but more importantly to be an extra set of eyes watching over the children as they go through the neighborhoods," the department said in a press release.
