'The Nutcracker' Comes to CLC this Weekend

For the fifth year, the Ruth Page Civic Ballet of Chicago brings its holiday performance of 'The Nutcracker' to Grayslake's College of Lake County Saturday and Sunday.

Local productions of “The Nutcracker” are being performed throughout Lake County in December, but for the fifth year in a row, the Ruth Page Civic Ballet of Chicago will bring its one-of-a-kind production to the College of Lake County’s James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts in Grayslake. Three shows will be presented: Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. The Civic Ballet has re-created Ruth Page’s beloved original full-length staging of “The Nutcracker” featuring choreography inspired by the experience of Dolores Lipinski and the late Larry Long. Presented until 1997 in the Arie Crown Theatre, this holiday classic is known nationally for its dramatization and beauty. “The Nutcracker” features superb …

Viewfinder: Tiny Dancers

Students beg for 'one more dance' in the Buffalo Grove Park District's ballet and tap class.

Music fills the air as the young dancers glide across the floor. Their images reflect in a mirror that run the length of the room as they stretch from bars, practicing plies and pointing the tips of their tiny toes. Rehearsal for the Joffrey? Well, not exactly. Practicing with no less enthusiasm, these dancers are on the younger side, from 4 to 6 to be exact. And they are learning the basics of ballet and tap in a Buffalo Grove Park District class at Emmerich Park. “I’m teaching them the basics,” said instructor Zanne Utschig, a former professional dancer and choreographer. “Positions, and the basic dance steps for ballet and tap so they can be in a nice routine for the recital.” That recital is scheduled for May, so for now, the six kids…
