Parents can hear a free lecture tonight on raising children in today's world. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Aptakisic Junior High School, 1231 Weiland Road, Buffalo Grove. It will focus on "What Every Parent Needs to Know About Children in Today's World." Bob Leece, Student Assistance Coordinator for Buffalo Grove High School, will discuss topics such as discipline skills that teach, effective communication and understanding our children. A question and answer session will follow. This is a parents only event, however, childcare is available for children age 5 and over for parents who preregister at http://www.tinyurl.com. Jessica Zheng, Stanley Fayn and Jack Rappaport are this year's award recipients.
Each year, two Aptakisic Junior High School students, one boy and one girl, are selected by teachers for their commitment to service and leadership qualities. Each recipient of this award receives a $50 savings bond in honor of Bob Basofin who was a leader in School District 102. This year, the eighth-grade teachers selected Jessica Zheng and Stanley Fayn to receive this award. Jessica Zheng not only strives for excellence through her grades, but also takes a leadership role through her participation in the PALS program, Orphans of the Storm, Newspaper Club, National Junior Honor Society and many other activities. Aptakisic Junior High School is looking for band alumni to participate in an alumni band concert at the school on Jan. 24. A rehearsal is scheduled for 4 p.m. that day, with the concert following at 7 p.m. Aptakisic graduates who are interested in participating may email Band Director Tom Eifert at teifert@d102.org or call the school at 847-353-5500.

Carey Smolensky's love of extreme sports enables him to ‘live life to the fullest’ while raising funds for charities.
Ever rappel down a skyscraper, drive in a half-scale NASCAR race, or slide over taxi cabs? Carey Smolensky, former wrestling coach at Aptakisic Junior High School, has done this and more in his participation in extreme sports. “I like to challenge myself by trying different things,” Smolensky said. “I want to get a rush out of life. We’re here for too short of a time, so I try to get as much out of life as possible. When I find something that looks exciting, I just do it.” Smolensky said his wife, Diane, and children, Blake and Rachel, are supportive of his participation in extreme sports.
