The grassroots Save Buffalo Grove organization plans to petition the Buffalo Grove Village Board, asking for a referendum on the sale of the golf course if the downtown proposal advances. Trustee candidates shared their views this week on a referendum.
Buffalo Grove’s trustee candidates weighed in Thursday night on whether the village should use a referendum to get input from residents before selling the Buffalo Grove Golf Course to a developer. The question pertains to a developer’s proposal to construct a downtown, which would include retail, recreational, residential and municipal uses on the land, which the village owns. The proposal, which is in conceptual stages, has raised concern from some Buffalo Grove residents. Some of them are part of the grassroots Save Buffalo Grove group, which organized this week’s forum. The group is also circulating petitions, collecting the signatures of residents who believe the sale of the property should be put to a referendum. The petitions will be…
Buffalo Grove's four trustee candidates shared their views Thursday on a developer's downtown proposal.
Buffalo Grove’s trustee candidates gathered Thursday night to share their thoughts on a developer’s proposal to construct a downtown in the village, among other topics. The gathering was hosted by Save Buffalo Grove, a group of citizens who have concerns about the downtown proposal. Residents filled a room at the Village Bar and Grill to hear the thoughts of current trustees Lester Ottenheimer III, Andrew Stein and Beverly Sussman, whose names will appear on the April 9 election ballot, as well as write-in candidate Jeff Battinus. All of the candidates said they have questions and concerns about the proposal and that they have not taken a position on it. “Right now, the downtown is just a concept. It’s an idea. It’s in its infancy. There…

An alteration to the event's agenda will allow all four candidates to share their views Thursday night.
All four Buffalo Grove trustee candidates will participate in Thursday night’s forum, they have confirmed. The plans, which were settled Wednesday, came after the three current trustees who are seeking re-election backed out of the event earlier this week due to concerns over compliance with the Illinois Open Meetings Act. Trustees Les Ottenheimer, Andy Stein and Beverly Sussman, along with write-in candidate Jeff Battinus, have since agreed to modifications in the forum’s agenda. The event will feature two of the candidates from roughly 7-8 p.m. and the other two from 8-9 p.m. This will prevent the three elected officials from being present at once, therefore eliminating the possibility that an Open Meetings Act violation might occur. “…

Save Buffalo Grove's trustee candidates forum will be held Thursday night even if only one candidate attends, an organizer said.
Updated 4:30 p.m. March 6: All Four Buffalo Grove Trustee Candidates to Participate in Forum Thursday’s Buffalo Grove candidates forum has not been canceled, but it could be a party of one. The forum, organized by Save Buffalo Grove, was originally going to showcase all four trustee contenders. The names of current trustees Les Ottenheimer, Andy Stein and Beverly Sussman will be on the April 9 ballot, while Jeff Battinus is running as a write-in candidate. At the advice of Buffalo Grove’s attorney, the three incumbents backed out of forum this week after questions arose about whether the event complied with the Open Meetings Act. The Act requires governing bodies to comply with a series of requirements when three or more elected …

Buffalo Grove resident Jeff Battinus won't be permitted to seek election this spring, after Andy Stein successfully objected to his petition.
Buffalo Grove resident Jeff Battinus’ name won’t appear on the April 9 ballot, village officials ruled Monday, making the spring election uncontested. The village’s electoral board unanimously agreed that state law prohibits candidates from appearing on the ballot if they miss filing deadlines for required paperwork. While Battinus filed most of his paperwork on Dec. 17, he failed to submit his statement of economic interests before the Dec. 26 deadline. He submitted the form on Jan. 2. The missed deadline was called out last week by Trustee Andy Stein, another election candidate. Stein urged Battinus to withdraw his candidacy before he filed an official objection, which sparked Monday’s hearing. Before the electoral board, made up of …

Buffalo Grove Trustee Andy Stein, who is running for a four-year term on the April 2013 ballot, has filed an objection to Jeff Battinus’ candidacy.
A Buffalo Grove trustee running for re-election filed an objection Wednesday to another candidate’s petition, saying Jeffrey Battinus did not file all of the required paperwork needed to place his name on the April 9 ballot. Andy Stein, who also filed for candidacy, challenged Battinus on Jan. 2 after noticing that his statement of economic interests was missing. Candidates are required to submit the form during the election filing period. The State Board of Elections’ 2013 candidate guide outlines all paperwork requirements and filing deadlines. “The statement [of economic interests receipt] must be filed during the calendar year in which the nominating petitions are filed. While the receipt need not accompany the nominating petitions at…
